(Pms United P.hess association.) AUCKLAND, September 12. Mr Justice Alpers gave judgment for £IOO, and costs, against the Newmarket Borough Council in favour of Leonard J. Patrick m an action for damages through plaintiff's car colliding with a safety zone. His Honor said that there was a conflict of evidence as to the height of the concrete above the level of the macadam on the railway, but he found that it was o? such a height as to be dangerous to traffic. CHRISTCHURCH, September 12. The sight of a coffin floating down the Avon proved a great shock to a number of men working on the river bank. The box was retrieved, but it was some time, owing to qualms on the part of the discoverers, before it was opened and found to be vacant. DANNEVIRKE, September 12. Richard Edward Ellis, who left a trail of valueless cheques behind him, was today committed to the Supreme Court »fc Christchurch for sentence on five charges of victimising Damevirke shopkeepers. Ho was also remanded to appear at Masterton. on a similar charge.
