DEFIANT POACHERS
SEAPLANE AND TRAWLERS. _ LONDON, August 30. The cruiser Vigilant, assisted by a seaplane, failed to stop defiant and resourceful trawlers which were poaching in the Firth of Clyde. A group of eight trawlers, the names of which had been obliterated, defied the seaplane’s orders to heave to and await the arrival of the Vigilant. Tho seaplane descended to the water, but the fishermen, whose blackened faces concealed their identity, weilded long poles, throw lumps of coal, and turned on their hoses, thus preventing the seaplane's crew' from boarding any of their vessels. Next, they threw fireballs, consisting of waste soaked in oil, thus compelling the seaplane to retreat. The fishermen resented tho arrival of the seaplane, considering that this removed the element of sport from their contest with the law Inasmuch as the Vigilant had occasionally failed to catch a speedier trawler, the authorities sent the submarine chaser Spey, which is capable of travelling 23 knots, resulting in several trawlers being caught and fined from £IOO to £2OO.
