"THE ROAD TO RUIN"

BRITISH INDUSTRY. 'A PESSIMISTIC VIEW . Press Association—By Telegraph— Copyright LONDON, September 13. (Received Sept. 13, at 5.5 p.m.) Sir George Hunter, bead of the Swan, Hunter, Wigbam shipbuilding firm, has written to Mr Baldwin suggesting that inquiry into coal mining is not enough. The present situation demands an immediate comprehensive inquiry into the economic position of the whole of the country’s industries. The future of the British Empire is at stake. Shipping is becoming more and more depressed, and ships arc increasingly lying up. Ihe iron and steel trade is largely idle, and shipbuilding cards are closed or closing. Ho concludes, “We are not on the road to improvement. We appear to he on the road to ruin.” —A. and N.Z. Cable.
