RUGBY LEAGUE.

TRIAL MATCH. The only League football game played in Dunedin on Saturday was a trial match between the Probables and Possibles, which was decided on the Oval in the presence of a fairly large number of spectators. There were a few pools of water on the ground when play was commenced, and n/s rain fell practically all the time the game was in progress the conditions both ove.rhoad and underfoot were very unpleasant. In spite of the unfavourable conditions. however, the play was interesting, the display being one of the best scon this season. The Probables, who proved much too good for their opponents, handled the ball really well, and gave a fine exhibition of concerted and dashing play, "heir task was made easier than it should have been by the weak tackling of the Possibles, whoso display in this department of the game was decidedly poor. The first try. which was scored by Cameron, was the outcome of a pretty piece of play in which Prescott took n prominent part. Prescott converted. A little later M'Kav and Prescott broke away, and the latter scored another try, which was not converted. The Probables, who dominated the game practically throughout, had an easy win. additional tries being scored by Prescott, Eckhoff, Webber, and Cameron. Two of them were converted by Ecldioff and one by Watson, the Probables thus winning by 21 points to nil. Dennis ton was probably the best of the backs in the winning team, and Hunt and Webber also played remarkably well. The most prominent forwards were Johnston and Sullivan. The game was capably controlled by Mr S. Underwood. SECOND TEST MATCH. QUEENSLAND DEFEATS NEW ZEALAND. / (Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. September 12. The eecond tost match between the Queensland Rugby League team and New Zealand was played at Carlaw Pork to-day. and resulted in a win for Queensland by 35 points to 14 The teams were as follows; — Queensland: Craig,; Aynsley, Spencer, Gorman. Crouch; Moores; Edwards, Steinohrt, Henderson, Bennett, Purcell, Purcells, Armbruster. Now Zealand: Gregory; Delgrosso, Kirwan Littlewood, Saunders; Wctherall; Webb, O’Brien, St. George, Herring. Siuie. O’Brien, Avery. New Zealand /were penalised alter three minutes’ play near halfway, and Craig kicked a goal—Queensland 2 points, Now Zealand nil. Immediately afterwards New Zealand made a rush, and Kirwan kicked across and scored Delgrosso kicked a goal -New Zealand 5, Queensland 2. From fast play Queensland almost scored. Queensland wore penalised, and Delgrosso lauded a goal—New Zealand 7 points. Queensland 2. Shortly after tight play in the New Zealand twenty-five Kirwm nuskicked and Spencer snapped up and scored. Craig missed the goal.—New Zealand 7 points, Queensland 5. A good chance was missed when Avery broke away, but a forward pass spoilt the movement. Iho pane was very fast and both sides were tackling well. The Queensland forwards broke away on a passing bout. Purcell knocked on, but recovered the ball and scored. Craig* kicked a goal.—Queensland 10 points, Now Zealand 7 Another nippy movement by the visitors saw Gorman break through to the full-back and transfer to Crouch, who scored. — Queensland 13 points, New Zealand 7. Spencer broke through and beat the fullback, but Delgrosso tackled him from behand near the lino. Just on half-time the New Zealand backs got going. Wetherali broke through, but lost the ball on the line, a force resulting. The half-time scores were: Queensland 13 points, New Zealand 7. , . Shortly after the interval Gorman was penalised for obstruction and Delgrosso goaled —Queensland 13 points. New Zealand 9. After ’a great struggle in the Queensland twenty-five the visiting backs broke awav. Crouch took the final pass and beat the full-back to score. Craig kicked a goal—Queensland 18 points, New Zealand 9- Fast play followed and Saunders broke through to the full-back supported by Kirwan. The latter was tackled bv Aynsley before receiving the ball, and an obstruction try was awarded, from which Delgrosso kicked a goal—Queensland 18 points, New Zealand 14. There, was further fast play by both sides and Craig kicked short and gave a chance to his forwards, Bennett scoring. Craig again kicked a goal—Queensland 23 points. New Zealand If points. Immediately afterwards Craig added two points to the visitors’ score by Inching a goal from a penalty. The Now Zealand forwards swept tfie ball up the field, Wetherali kicking into touch at the comer, but the visitors came back. Clover passing gave Aynsley a chance to score behind the posts. Craig kicked a goal— Queensland 30 points. New Zealand 14. The visitors were getting the ball from the scrums and they kept up a constant attack. Purcell broke away and sent to Steinohrt, who scored. Craig kicked a goal, and the game ended: Queensland 35 points. New Zealand 14 points.
