SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (Feom Ou.r Own Cobbeepondent.) INVERCARGILL. September 11. STOCK. The stock market continues good with prices firm on a par with those ruling within recent weeks Fat cattle, if anything, are inclined to advance, and at present there is just enough prime ox Beef coming forward to fill requirements. Fat sheen are making good money for prime finished. Fat Sheep.—Prim© heavy wethers 48a to 525, medium 43a 6d to 465, lighter 40s to 425, prime ©wo 36s to 40a, medium 30a to 345. ..... Store Sheep.—Very Ettl© business is being transacted in this class, and prices remain much the same as our previous report. Two-tooth ewes to 525, ewe hoggets to 425, wether hoggets 55s to 38s. Store Cattle.—Good forward three year bullocks £9 10s to £ll 10s, two year bullocks £5 10s bo £7 10s, yearling bullooka £3 10s to £4 10s, dairy cows, good £lO to £l4, medium £7 10s to £9. GRAIN REPORT. Oats.—This market is, if anything, still firmer than in last report and to some extent this position is induced by sales that have been made in northern centres. Holders of oats of any quantity are now reduced considerably, as several houses have altogether disposed of their surplus, oven to having barely reserved sufficient for their retail trade for seed requirements. The actual holders of oats are more than ever convinced that prices will become more favourable for them even to the extent of their being able to oome out with the oats held at a profit. Current quotations for shipment are 4s 6d for A Gartons, 4s 2d B’s for Septernbor-October shipment. Nothing whatever is now being offered by farmers and it is quite certain all last season’s seeds are now in merchants’ hands. Chaff. —This is offering in excess of requirements and merchants are able to select and pick up their wants at £4 15s per ton, handy sidings, for prime quality. There seems little prospect of there being any improvement, in chaff values as the demand is entirely local, and from this out of a diminishing quantity. Rye Grass.—There is little or no movement in so far as wholesale trade is concerned AA'ith other centres. The retail business, hoivever, is decidedly active. the quantity of ryegrass held by merchants is in many instances insufficient for local requirements, taking as a basis the average sowing down of the last- two or three years. Prices for shipment still remain firm on the basis of 5s 9d for 27-28 machine dressed seed up to 6s 3d for seed of 3011 i weight, extra heavy linos proportionately higher. Offers from growers have altogether ceased, and here also it is evident the season’s crop is in merchants’ hands. Inquiries for crested dogstail have been exceptionally brisk for the last two or three weeks, and it is well nigh apparent that all new crop seed of high germination has been sold for oversea shipment. CANTERBURY M A RKBTS. (Peb United Tress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 11. A flutter developed in the potato market during the week that made operations somewhat nervy. The actual cause is not very definite except that Australian buyers had quietened for the time being. However, it served to bring quotations down with a run. Whereas £9 15s had been obtained for Australian business on Monday, the price slipped to £9 -osterday. At this price the market steadied, and the fact that Sydney has been asking for October quotations is a hopeful sign of the, future stability of the market. Auckland was quick to respond to the Australian development and a slide of 15s per ton developed to-day. However, there is a steadier feeling, and quotations are £8 2s to £8 ss, bottom point being £B. Delay in the departure of the Katoa until yesterday allowed that vessel to take a heavier consignment, her cargo comprising 7800 sacks. Oats are firm, but there is verv litle business passing, and if, is not clear that purchases arc going into consumption. There are plenty of A grade Gartons being offered south at 4s 6d, f.0.b., s.i., and a sale or two have been made at this figure. There is a dearth of A Gartons in Canterbury, and this is helping the firm holding, which features trade in the south. When weather picks up sufficiently in Canterbury to permit spring threshing, offers of B grades may he expected. There are still many stacks to ho seen about, the country. The Avet weather has held up the demand for seeds. White clover is easier in price at Home, and this is reflected locally. Values for farmers’ undressed, on trucks, arc from Is to Is Id a lb.

Cowgraas is unchanged at 9d to lOd. Danish cocksfoot samples are of good quality, and tending to keep down the values of loos I stuff. Peas maintain a firm tone, and are -worth 7s 3d, f.0.b., s.i,. for No. I’s. Fowl wheat is in brisk demand, a good deal of business having taken place at 7s 2J,d, f.o.b, LONDON MARKETS.
