DARGAVILLE, July 14. The final trials of the Northern Wniroa bridge spanning the Wniroa River were made to-day, when, in the presence of a Government engineer and representatives of the contributing local bodies, a 12-ton traction engine was driven the full length of the bridge and also stood on the lift' span opening, the whole test showing that there was not the least vibration and everything was satisfactory. The lift span, which is in two parts, weighing 20 tons in all, was lowered and raised in a minute and a-half, and worked beautifully. The bridge is nowopen for traffic, but will not be officially opened until the Prime Minister is able to come up and perform the ceremony. Everyone was quite pleased that everything went so satisfactorily, as the bridge has been the cause of a lot of controversy since it was first mooted in 1914 and the first pile driven in 1921. The bridge is 1578 ft long, with 37 spans of 40ft each, and an open span of 60Et, and it is fitted with up-to-date lifting gear for onening the span. The width of the bridge from kerb to kerb is 12ft, with two passing stations of 18ft each, and eight refuges for foot passengers. The whole of the bridge except the decking and hand rails is of ferro concrete and steel. The lift span is worked bv two 12 h.p. oil engines' The total cost to date has been £47,000. and the contractors were Messrs G. M.' Fraser and Sons, who have been responsible fo r the erection of many of the 'dominion’s largest bridges. The completion of the bridge opens up a new era in the district, and will enablo much better communication with the rich Hore and Ruawai flats, connecting some thousands of acres of the best dairying land in the dominion. It will also provide better communication by road to the railway at Huarau, on the North Auckland Main Trunk line. The bridge will do away with two ferries, one of which has done service for half a century. It forms part, of the main highway scheme of the Whangare-Dargaville-Paparoa-Auckland road, and the erection will enable motorists to reach Auckland in good weather in seven hours.
