(Pee United Pbess Association.) HAMILTON, July 9. In the Magistrate’s Court a jockey named Harold James Tinker was charged with converting a car to his own use without colour of right, and also with dangerous driving, and driving without a license. Evidence was given that the car was driven swiftly, skidded, and went over a bank. The owner had not given permission for the use of the car. Accused said he had been sitting in the car with the owner and other men. The owner left, and one man suggested a ride, saying that the owner would not mind. Accused was fined £lO on each of the first two charges, and £1 on the third. GISBORNE, July 9. The naan Thompson, arrested yesterday for breaking windows, was committed to a mental hospital. While a dance was proceeding in tho public hall, the dancers wore startled by bricks crashing through two of the windows. On investigation being made, this man was found in tho street hurling missiles at shop windows. WELLINGTON, July 9. At the Appeal Court sitting in re Henry Edward Elliott (solicitor) —a motion to have his name struck from the rolls for failure to have has trust account audited—Mr Blair, for respondent, mentioned that ho had not yet hoard from his client. The court agreed to let the matter stand over meantime, the Chief Justice remarking that evidently respondent did not desire anything further done in his favour. John Muir appeared at the court- charged with stealing 12,000 pennies from slot telephones. Tho evidence of tho detectives was that accused was seen loitering about telephone booths at tho Post Office. It had been suspected that tampering was going on, as tho records showed that the receipts had diminished. A watch was kept on Muir, and when arrested ho admitted obtaining £SO by manipulating machines. Ho pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence. CHRISTCHURCH, July 9. During the last fortnight burglars have raided city shops and warehouses, gaining their entrance with jemmies. Most of tho loot consisted of tobacco and cigarettes. At one place £6O in cash was taken. John George Burgess, aged 58 years, a builder, was charged with bigamy this morning, and was remanded for a week, bail being allowed in the sum of £2CO. The police stated that Burgess had surrendered himself.
