Painleve, in on interview, stated that the precipitate departure of General Naulin for Morocco was in no manner necessary. He added: “The news of the past two days haa been very satisfaatory from the viewpoint both of the operations themselves and the loyalty of the tribes.'' —Reuter RIFF DEFENSIVE BROKEN. TERRIBLE CHARGE BY SPAHIS. LONDON, July 8. (Received July 9, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Chronicle’s Baris correspondent states that the Riffiaa offensive on the Taza sector, which lasted for two days, has been shattered. Columns of the enemy again and again stormed the French positions at Babtoza but always met a deadly fire, until they fled helterskelter. The French threw two squadrons of Spahis against the disheartened enemy. The Spahis rode full tilt at the flying enemy sabring their rear. Many of the Riffians throw away their rifles to flee, but the Spahis overtook them. Those, who did not fall to the French sabree were hurled into a ravine by the rush of the charging squadrons. Hundreds of Riffian dead mark the line of the flight. Road communications between Zaza, and. Fez have been re-established.—A. and N.Z. Cable. BRITISH ATTITUDE DEFINED. LONDON, July 8. (Received July 9, at 9 p.m.) The British Note to Madrid regarding Tangier will indicate the intention to avoid entanglement in the Moroccan imbroglio or any action at Tangier which might give Abd-el Krim a pretext to cliallenge the neutrality of the international zone.—A. and N.Z.
