(Received July 9, at 5.6 p.m.) Shanghai reports show that the situation there continues to be wore hopeful. Things are quiet, with the exception of farther kidnapping of tramway and other employees, such aa foreign residents employed as house servants. There are numerous cases of confiscation by strikers of milk, vegetables, and other foods supposed to be for foreign consumption. These goods are being distributed to the strikers and students. Coolies confiscated 100 cows at the railway station and took them to the union headquarters in Chinese territory. The tram services are somewhat curtailed in Peking. —Reuter. CUSTOMS REVENUE DECLINES. PEKING, July 8. (Received July 9, at 5.5 p.m.) Owing to the Shanghai strike and the disturbed condition ot the country generally the Customs revenue for the six months ended Juno 30 declined by 1,500,000 taels.—Reuter. The nominal value of the tael is about 3s. THE CRUISER BRISBANE. MR BRUCE EXPLAINS POSITION. MELBOURNE, July 9. In the House of Representatives, Mr Bruce, replying to a question regarding the warship Brisbane in Chinese waters, said that - in communications with the British Government the principle of exchange, as it affected the Brisbane, was clearly defined. He reiterated that the exchange cruiser was under the command of the admiral in charge of the station to which the cruiser was attached. This admiral had authority to use the exchange cruiser in the same way as he would use the vessels belonging to his own squadron. That authority extended to the necessity for safeguarding the lives and the property of British subjects. If any further action were contemplated, the admiral had to obtain authority from the British or the Australian, Government, as the case might be. The Ministry had not taken steps to recall the Brisbane. >
