GENERAL NEWS.

A well-attended meeting of the Hope of Dunedin Tent was presided over by C.R. tiis. D. Rond last Monday evening. The usual business of the Tent having been attended to, throe now members were elected and duly initiated, after which the election of officers took place. The following were elected for the ensuing quarter : C.R., Sis. J. M'Lean; D.IL, Bro. L. J. Smith secretary; Bro. A. V. Gain (reelected) ; treasurer, Bro. A. T. MTncloc (re-elected); Levite, Sis. G. Drysdale; Guardian, Bro. A. Campbell; money steward, Bro. Bond; writing steward. Sis. M. Hill; auditors, Bros. E. A. Rosevos-i and R. Farrant (re-elected); trustees, Bros. J. Fleming, J. J. Tregear, and R. J. Runciman (all re-elected); superintendent of juveniles, Bro. A. 11. Walkinshaw (reelected) ; delegates to Provincial Council, Bros. T. V. Gain, A. 11. Walkinshaw (reelected), and Bro. L. V. Gain. P.D.C.R. Bro. R. Farrant installed the officers and was assisted by Bro. G. Walkinshaw, who acted as Levite. The quarterly report and balance sheet was then read and reported on by Bro. R. Farrant (auditor), who complimented the Tent on having further strengthened its position both financially and numerically A pleasant evening was spent in the Caversham Club Pavilion on Thursday. July 2, when a lecture with lantern slides illustrations was given by the president (Mr F. Wilkinson) on “Food in Relation to Health and Disease.” Although the weather was rather wet and stormy there was a fair number of members present. Mr H. Stubbs (vice-president), in proposing a vote of thanks to Mr Wilkinson, thanked him for giving them such an instructive and interesting evening. The monthly meeting of the Forbury School Committee was held on Monday night, Mr W. Fleming presiding. The head master reported that the average attendance for the month was 670.9. The average roll number was 712, and the percentage of attendance 94.2. The average attendance for the June quarter was 681.1, the average roll number 712.7, and the percentage of attendance E‘5.5. The amount deposited in the School Savings Bank for the month was £46 ss. It was decided to grant the sum of £5 5s to the cost of the Court of Education at the Now Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. Mr Ballard reported that the Visiting Committee had been at the school during the week and that a hole in the yard needed repairing, and also that two or throe windows wore broken. It was decided that the chairman attend to the work. Accounts amounting to £2B 10s wore passed for payment.

That the Good Templar Order is still a live institution was shown by the large attendance of members and visitors at the Rescue Lodge, No. .105, which met in the Oddfellows’ Hail, King Edward street, on Tuesday evening. The Hope of Dunedin Lodge, No. 135, hea led by the C.T., Bro. E. Wilson, visited officially, and the members wore accorded a hearty welcome. Urn. Wilson gave a very interesting account of his recent visit to the WMlington district. G.C.T. Bro. Dalton also gave an interesting report of the G.L. I.'x. and Advisory Board meeting held in Wellington. The report showed that lodges were being reopened, and the Order was making good headway, especially among the young people. Correspondence was read from (he district secretary in reference to the District Lodge meeting on Monday next. After business the customary vote to the visitors was responded to by Bro. E. Wilson, C.T., Hope of Dunedin, and it being young members’ night Sisters O. Riddel and L. Baird had arranged a programme suitable for the occasion. The Star of the South Juvenile Temple also met the same evening, Bro. J. Hilton, S.J.W., being in charge. There was a large attendance, and u good programme was rendered by the members. On Tuesday evening last the Social Committee of the Otago Tramping Club held another very successful progressive five hundred evening in the Returned Soldiers’ Association club room, Moray place, and although the weather was inclement a large number of members and friends was present. At intervals during the evening items were given by fellow' trampers, which were much appreciated by all. The noncard players were employed by solving cross word puzzles. After supper had been partaken of the President, Mr R. Oilkison, presented the prizes, and the singing of the National Anthin brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.

A very successful concert, under the auspices of the Tomahawk School Committee, was held in the Gloncaim Hall on Tuesday evening. Mr R. C. Colllins (chairman), during the course of a few remarks, thanked the performers for their enjoyable items and stated (hat the proceeds would bo very welcome to tho committee and enable them to carry on their 'work at the school. lie also made feeling reference to tho recent death of Mr Alex. Smaill, a very energetic worker in connection with tho school. Tho following was the programme:—ltems by Mr Fryo’s orchestra; vocal solos—Mesdamos Mathioson and Samson Messrs F. Hall, D. Robertson, and R. W. Fox; violin solo, to Frye; flute solo, Mr S. Robertson; recitations, Miss Ngairo Cough Inn (“The House that Jack Built”), ami Master M. Goughian (‘Tho Baby”); dance duo, Misses D. Rodgers and D. Haymes; Irish Jig, Miss N. Goughian; stop dance, Miss V. Gautly: military dance, Miss Moira Goughian’s pupils; vocal duet. Misses N. Goughian and V. Gantly. At the conclusion of the concert supper was handed round, and the proceedings closed wit ha few hours’ dancing.
