In Bulgaria, France, Italy, Algeria, and India attar of roses is produced. It is estimated that from the middle of May till the end of July more than 750,000 people in South-eastern Europe make a living by f ilneiiug roses and assisting in the preparation of the essence. About 3000 kilos, of rose leaves, the yield of two and a-half acres of land, give one kilo, of attar. The ved rose only is used for making th e essence; the white rose and the yellow rose appear to lack the oil which is essential to the product. There is a lack of uniformity in tho thickness of a Bank of England note. It is thicker in tho left-hand corner than in any other part, to enable it to receive a sharper impression of the vignette there. This aids in the discovery of counterfeits, as the latter arc invariably of one thickness.
