SAFE-KEEPING OF TROPHIES.

CITY COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE. With 'ho view to displaying effectively the Sanders and Tipton Cups, the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association recently ■wrote to the City Council, asking it if it would allow the trophies to be placed in the City Council Chambers for safe keeping. The following reply was received by the association : “With reference to your letter of April 22, in which you suggest that the council might arrange t-o find a prominent location for the Sanders Cup and other trophies won by sports organisations in the city, I have to inform you that the matter has been looked into, and it would appear that the most suitable place for the display of such trophies would be the Public Library. Unfortunately, space in that building is limited, but the librarian reports that he could find room for a small exhibit at the main entrance. It is suggested that the sports bodies of Dunedin might combine to obtain a show case in which all the local trophies (ould be deposited. If that were done it might be possible to find room for the case in the hall of the library, whore it would be seen by everyone making use of the departments. If the idea appeals to the association, it would be necessary for the various bodies interested to take the responsibility for the safety of the trophies and for insuring the articles against fire and theft. It would, of course, be understood that the greatest possible care would be taken of the trophies, and every reasonable precaution taken to ensure their safe keeping.” The President (Mr W. R. Waters) said that he thought it was a petty act on the part of the City Council to make such a suggestion. The letter appeared to suggest an evasion of what the association asked for. The council was showing a poor sporting spirit in the matter of displaying the various cups and trophies won by Otago. The citizens of Dunedin were vqry proud of these trophies, and they should be displayed. Mr E. A. Davys said that the City Council was showing a very poor spirit. Tho letter was received, and it was decided that nothing further be done in the meantime in regard to displaying tho trophies.
