CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following are the principal clauses in the reports to be presented to the City Council at its meeting on Wednesday evening:— . The Finance Committee recommends that £7O be provided for the erection of fences and extra dressing accommodation at the St. Clair Baths. The Library Committee reports that sundry painting and repairs in the New .Zealand Department and the Reference Department have been authorised at an estimated cost of £8 10s. Arrangements have bean made for the better electric lighting of the Reference Department at an estimated cost of £lO. Two electric heaters have been installed, one for the librarian’s office and one for the office in the Reference Library, the cost being £ls 12s. The General Committee reports that one application (or a license for premises to be used for the retail sale of meat, one for premises for the retail sale of fish, one for premises for the retail sale of milk, two applications for second-hand dealers’ licenses, and two applications for advertising signs have been granted. Five applications for advertising signs were declined. The Works Committee recommends that the tender of Messrs Cossons and Black for the supply of steel crossing plates ho accepted. The tender is the lowest of six received. —The committee also recommends that the under-mentioned arrangements for laying off a short length of new roadway to give bettor access to properties in Glenmore street, Glenleith Township, Woodhaugh, be approved ; —(a) Mr T. M‘Curthy to sell to the council an area of approximately one-quarter acre at the rate of £l2O per acre, any surplus land not required on the north western side of the area so purchased to be sold to the adjoining owner, Mr C. W,. Johnson, at the same rate ; (b) Mr Johnson to buy such area of approximately 12 poles on this basis and also transfer to the council approximately five and a-half poles in exchange for part of Glenmore street, containing an area of 9.6 poles; (c) Mr Donaldson to sell to the council an area of approximately three poles at the same rate as that to bo paid to Mr M'Oarthy; (d) the necessary steps to betaken by the council to have the portion of Glenmore street to be transferred to Mr Johnson dosed and the area now proposed to be purchased laid off as a public street at a width of 40ft. The approximate cost to the council will be £23 6s. The council, in addition, is to bear all costs of transfer and also fencing required. The estimated cost of forming and metalling the new portion of the roadway and erecting fencing is £277. The .Committee reports that authority has been granted to the engineer to form a 6ft, wide track along the of the extension of Signal Hill road at an estimated cost of £4O. Tire pathway is required to enable pedestrians to reach the scenic reserve at Signal Hill. The city engineer has been instructed to record for consideration with next year’s estimates the matter of constructing new K. and G. with asphalt path in Kaikorai Valley road between Stone street and Brockville road, and from Brockville road to Falcon street. The estimated cost of the first portion of the work is £525, and of the second portion £3OO. The Water Committee reports that the work of connecting the 4-inch pressure main from the Maori Hill supply to serve the higher level areas only of the Anderson’s Bay district was completed, and the system put into operation on the 2nd inst. The city engineer rojxirta that the result has been a decided improvement in the pressure in the upper areas. The Electric Power and Lighting Committee reports that the minimum guarantee of £420 required from the Brighton district for electrical supply has now been almost wholly obtained. In view of the large number of small guarantees involved, averaging from 36s up to £5, —only about a dozen being in excess of the latter sum, — it has been considered advisable to accept individual guarantees, owing to the cost that would be involved on property owners if the usual registered agreements were called for. The estimated cost of reticulating the district is £2540, and the engineer has been given authority to have the work out in hand. In regard to the offers received for the second-hand mining plant lying in the Waipori district, it has been decided to accent the offer submitted bv the Tingha Tin Minos, New South Wales, of £l5O for certain items which wore purchased by the council from Messrs Knight, Gare, and Russell. The remainder of the plant will be sold as opportunity offers as quickly as possible. Authority has been granted for the construction of a brick garage to house the department’s office oar at the south end of the store, in Cumberland street. The estimated cost of the work is £9O. The Tramwavs Committee reports that authority hgs been granted for the purchase of a pneumatic tamping machine. This machine is used primarily for packing sleenors, and in view of the amount of work of this nature ahead of the department, it can be used to advantage. A report by the tramway manager in regard to the running of the motor buses for the past two weeks indicates that both the Maori Hill and Exhibition runs are improving steadily. _____
