UNEMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN
EFFECT OF DOLE SYSTEM. SHORTSIGHTEDNESS OR LABOUR. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Juno 11. Mr F. Linzell, a London building contractor, who has just arrived m Melbourne, said that 1,260,000 men were out of work in Great Britain. This was directly accountable to the pernicious influence of the dole. Under that system anyone who had been dismissed from Ins employment could claim tho dole, wliilo if he left of his own accord he received nothing. The result was that lazy men—and °therc were many —in order to obtain money for nothing, gave the employers a maximum amount of insolence and a minimum amount of labour, in the hope of being dismissed. The trade muons were another source of unemployment as the unionists believed that by going slow they would create more work, whereas they were merely opening the door to foreign competition. Last year OV( T too,ooo unionists deserted the organised ranks, and were now working as nonunionists.
