Her Excellency Lady Alice Forgusson, with Miss Forgusson and Miss OrrEwing, paid a visit tho Y.W.C.A. yesterday afternoon. She was wolcomod by Mrs Sutherland Ross (president), Mrs 'taverner (vice-president), Mrs Nicholson (treasurer), and Miss Batt (general secretary). A visit wa s paid to the cafeteria, where members of the board, the chairmen of committees, tbc secretarial staff, and a representative of Advisory Board were presented to her Excellency. A number of girl citizens was also present. Mrs Ross, in a short speech, said how kind it was of her Excellency to visit tho institution, and expressed her deep appreciation of tho action. Her Excellency, in reply, said that, as dominion patron of the Y.W.C.A., she was greatly interested in its progress, and felt it a pleasure to be able to bo present. She was specially interested in'the Girl Citizens’ Movement. A tour was made of the hall and the hostel, and the parly left to the sound of three cheers given by the girls assembled. « 4 * Mrs R. C. Bell, who was visiting Timaru, has returned to her homo in St. David street. * » * Mrs Rowe, of Invercargill, is the guest of hel mother, Mrs Galbraith, of Roslyn. » ♦ * The Misses Burton, who were visiting Christchurch, have returned to their home in Alva street. 4 t * Miss Edith Howes has returned to her home in Anderson’s Bay after a trip to the North Island. Mrs Witholl, of Canterbury, and Mrs Wilson, of .Invercargill, are the guests of their mother, Mrs Howie, in Maori Hill. * * * The engagement is announced of the Rev. G. T.' Tollhouse, M.A., of Dunedin, to Miss Lucy Allan, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. W. Allan, of “Bahiagard,” Blackford road, Edinburgh. At the musical hour at the Otago Women’s Club' on Wednesday afternoon an enjoyable programme was supplied. Mrs H, C. Campbell contributed some pianoforte selections, and Mrs Bain, accompanied by 'Miss I. While, played the violin. Mrs B. B. Jones, of Invercargill, who is at, present in Great Britain, had the intention, when tho last mail left, of going fo North Wales on a visit to relatives and thence to .Scotland, where Peebles, her father’s birthplace, will he her headquarters. In August a tour will he made to France, Italy, and Switzerland, and the return journey will probably bo via tho United States. > * • Miss Hula Sargood and Mrs Leslie Mills gave a bridge party last evening at tho residence of Mrs F. R. Sargood, Newington. The party was in honour of Miami Mrs G. Sinclair and Mr and Mrs M’Kellar, besides whpm there were present Mr and Mrs Sim, Mr and Mrs N. Haggitt, Mosdames Ilislop and Durant, Misses Callaway, Laidlaw, Stock, Vallange, and Finch, and (Messrs Vallange, Reynolds, Sinclair, Bj irren. Sise, Dunlop, Holland, Wright, and Macpherson. * -X * Tho quarterly meetings of the T.W.O.A. Field Committee were held in Christchureh on May 2(i and 27. Delegates from Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin attended, and matters of keen interest were considered. It was decided that it was not in the host interests of the work in New Zealand to set up self-government at the present time, so that tho connection with Australia will continue as at present until the next triennial Convention in 1928. The contribution Mint tho Y.W.C.A. could make to the Dunedin Exhibition received consideration. anil it was decided to make a ih-meial grant to the support of the religions and ethical section, also to arrange a series of leetnrettes and demonstrations selling forth different aspects of Y.W.C.A. work. The Dominion Girl Citizens’ Conference is to be held in Dunedin, and some form of display work will he arranged at that time. The committee also accepted the invitation of the local association to hold the annua! meetings and conferences here in February. After the inspection of the Exhibition buildings by his Excellency and Lady Alice Fergusson and party on Wednesday morning, the guests were entertained at morning tea by Mr and Mrs J. Sutherland Ross. Several of the directors and oitieials of the exhibition were present, as well as members of the Executive Committee of (he women’s section. The gathering was a most informal and happy one. The two speeches were brief and hearty. L-orty Alice showed a keen interest in tho
women’s section, of which she is patron. She hopes to lend, for exhibition purposes, some beautiful oh} pieces of fine needlework •which she very much treasures. Her Excellency also stated that she had written personally to her Majesty the Queen, and she is certain that Queen Mary will be interested and will give the .section some tangible evidence of that interest. * * * Lady Ferguson gave a dinner party at her residence, “Wychwood,” on Wednesday evening, in honour of her Excellency, Lady Alice Fergnsson, Miss Fergusson, ami Miss Orr-Ewing. The hostess received her guests in the drawing room, and was beautifully gowned in heliotrope embossed velvet with diamond jewels. Lady Aliee Fergusson wore fuchsiacoloured lace and pearls, while both Miss Fergusson and Miss Orr-Ewing wore in black lace with white ermine furs. The other guests were Lady Sim, Lady Williams, Mrs C. Statham, Mrs J. Hutchison, Mrs G. Ferguson (Wainiate North), Mrs P. Sargood, Mrs H. L. Taplcy, Mrs Sutherland Ross, Mrs J. Cook, and Miss Williams’. The Mayor and Mrs Tapley entertained their Excellencies tho Governor-Ge oral and Lady Alice Furgusson last evening at a dinner party at the Fernhill Club. Mrs Tapley wore n graceful gown of black charmcuse trimmed with fur and diamond ornaments, while her Excellency _was in black satin relieved with jet. Miss Fergusson wore cyclamen georgette trimmed with silver, and Miss Orr-Ewing blue georgette. Major Havilnnd and Mr Little accompanied the vice-regal party. Other guests wore Sir William and Lady Sun, Sir Lindo and Lady Ferguson, Mr and Mrs C. E. Statham, Mr and Mrs J. S. Boss, Mr nnd Mrs P. It. Sargood, Miss Donniston, Miss Williams, Mr G. L. Deiuiistoii, and Mr It. Tapley. The members of tho Otago Women’s Club entertained her Excellency, Lady Alice Fergusson, at, a reception on \\ ednesday evening in the club. Tho lounge, which was crowded with members, presented a bright and animated scene. When tho \ icereffal party arrived, tho National Aril-horn Wits sung' after which Miss Marjorie statham. wearing a gown of soft gold tissue, presented her Excellency with a bouquet of red rosebuds and maiden-hair fern. Lad'- Ferguson, president of tho club, then spoke a few words of welcome. She wore heliotrope embossed velvet relieved with diamonds. Her Excellency, who lookcu charming in a gown of fuchsia-colouied lace and pearls, said in reply that she thanked the club members for the reception they had given her, and said that on her return visit to Dunedin she hoped to know the town and its people much better. Her speech was short but very graceful. Accompanying her Excellency wore her daughter, Miss Fergusson, am! her niece. Miss Orr-Ewing, both of whom wore black laco and white ermine furs. A. Cook (vieux rose mororain), Mr? T. O, Ross (old gold brocadod velvet), Mrs Doorly (black spangled net), Mrs Gilkison (black morocain), Miss Ross (black), Mrs W. Holmes (pale pink brocade), Mrs Blues (black satin relieved with red). Miss Williams (black satin and crystal). Miss Martin (pale heliotrope brocade), and Miss Nicolson (turquoise blue morocain). Cook, Hutchison, Allan (2), Dr Marion Whyte, ami others. During the evening a small programme was presented. A song and dance, “Spring,” and a tableau, “Summer,” wore given by Misses I lev wood, Milne, I inch, Bridgoman, Stephenson, and Blomtield, all appropriately dressed; after which Misses Sargood and Heywood gave a bacchante dance. A choir of iiine—Mesdames Evans, Wilson, Holmes, nnd Frtirbaim, and Misses Vickers, T’hwigg, White, Sawers, and Neale—contributed some pretty part songs. Solos were rendered - by Mrs Evans, Mrs Wilson, anil Miss Vickers,' As each singer was dressed in black, the effect under a rod lamp was very pretty. Accompanying and incidental music were played by Mrs "Mason (black satin), Miss Barron (black satin and green), Miss White (black not.), Miss M‘George (pink velvet), Miss Hanham (green bended net), Miss Williams (black satin), and Miss Dairyrnplo (shrimp brocade). Upholstered furniture demands careful selection, hut wo can recommend with every confidence that offered by C. and W.
