NEW ZEALAND PIGS AS IRISH.
ALLEGATIONS FROM SLIGO. (From Ode Own Correspondent.) LONDON, May 8. When Mr Roddy asked whether 1050 carcases of New Zealand pigs for curing purposes were imported by Messrs Cook and M'Neilly, Sligo, during February, March, and April, whether it was alleged they were subsequently exported to Scotland, and sold as Irish-cured bacon; and whether, in view of the very serious injustice to the Irish bacon trade, steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence of this traffic, Air Hogan, Alinistcr for Agriculture, said carcases of pigs bad recently boon imported into Sligo, and investigations were being made as to the manner in which they were being disposed of. Any further necessary steps would be taken to prevent the sale as Irish bacon of bacon made from imported carcases. “Will the Minister agree that this is a very good argument for the protection of bacon ?” asked Air Wilson. “No ” replied the Minister, amid laughter. ’
