LAWRENCE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Borough Council was hehl in the Town llajl on Monday night. The Mayor (Mr J. tv, Simpson) occupied the chair. A telegram was received from the ITon. .1. G. Coates thanking the council for the congratulatory reference oil his appointment of Prime Minister. A letter was received from the Public Works Department informing the council that the department could not give an additional subsidy on the Colonsay street channel, and if the council were desirous of accepting the amount originally offered, a revised voucher would have to he sent forward and a draft would then be remitted. A letter was received from Sir Francis Bell regarding a national memorial to bo erected in recognition of the services of the late Prime Minister.—The letter was received and held over until the next meeting. A letter was received from Mr Sinclair (inspector of health) anent his visit to Lawrence last regarding the .nuisance complained of at Hospital Creek. He recommended alterations in the bed of the creek to prevent a iccurrancc of the nuisance, and reported that the conveniences attached to the Town Hall were very crude and unsanitary. Ho. submitted plans for the guidance of the Sanitation Committee, so that the work could be undertaken and be in uniformity with the requirement of the Health Department. Mr W. B. Steel, secretary of the Otago Expansion League, wrote informing the council of the annual pre-sessional meeting with local members of Parliament on Friday, June 19. —The Mayor was instructed to bo present on that occasion. Two letters from ratepayers and a petition from eight other ratepayers was received complaining of the wandering cattle nuisance, and asking that it be abated—The council decided to'’instruct the ranger to take action forthwith against offenders. Cr Fraser (chairman of the Works Committee) reported that it had decided to engage the services of Mr J. Edio, civil engineer, to give them an estimate of the cost of rebuilding Barneys Bridge, and then the estimated cost and plan would be forwarded to the District Highway Council for a contribution to the work under the provisions of the Act. The committee also recommended a survey of the Phoenix race, and the procuring of an estimate of the cost of extending it, and pipe-lining certain portions so that the borough would have a guaranteed supply of pure water for domestic purposes. He maintained that if this work was undertaken the water-would be delivered into the reservoir clean, and not ,as formerly, in an indifferent ennditmu. Cr Claik reported that the town clerk’s new offices were almost complete with the exception of a few minor dot nils. He recommended that the committee be empowered to arrange about office furniture. The clerk was asked to lay on the table at the next council meeting the cost of constructing the Campbelltown street channel. Accounts amounting to £BO were passed for payment.
