SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING, The anneal -meeting of tho Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand was held ill the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. There was a fair attendance of members, and tho president (Sir William Sim) presided. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, said there was very little in the balance sheet which called for remark. There had been only two wrecks during tho year which required attention from tho society. In tho first case tho sum of £l2O was expended in relief for the crew of tho launch Sunlight, and in tho second £250 had been expended in relief of tho crow of the steamer Ngahero, which was wrecked near Groyrncuth. Fortunately' there wp no loss of life. Tho report, ns usual,' recorded a large contribution from entertainments held on board the Union Company’s steamers, over £306 having been received from that source. There was also a contribution from tho Huddurt Parker Company. The report stated that tho society was very much indebted to the companies mentioned, and also their officers, for those sums, hut he thought the passengers were also deserving of thanks, for ho ventured to say it was they who contributed tho major portion of tho money collected.—(Laughter.) Mr G. L. Domiiston, in seconding the motion for tho adoption of the report and balance shoot, said ho quite agreed with the mover of the motion that the passengers on the companies’ steamers were deserving of tho society’s best thanks for their generous response to collections taken up in connection with entertainments given on steamers. Tho companies and their officers were also deserving of a special vote of thanks. Sir George Fenwick said it was a pleasure to be on board the Union Company’s steamers when those entertainments wore given. The passengers contributed cheerfully—in fact, it was a pleasure to see how readily they responded to tho appeal, and he believed this was largely duo to tho fact that they knew they were contributing to the funds of the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand.—(Applause.) Mr C. W, Chamberlain explained that tho auditor’s report on the year’s -accounts slated that the Bank of New Zealand had furnished him with a certificate that it held, on behalf of tho society, the documents relating to its investments, with the exception of iiiseribed slock, £llOO. Ho had pleasure in stating that the documents for that £llOO wore now lodged in the Bank of New Zealand with other securities The motion was carried. On the motion of Mr Chamberlain a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the president (Sir William Sim) for his work on behalf of the society during tho year - . The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —Patron, Sir Cnarles Forgusson (Governor-General); vice-patrons, the Hon. J. G- Coates and Sir Francis Dillon Dell; president, Sir William Sim; hon. solicitor, Mr J. A. Cook; auditor, Mr C. Russell Smith; executive—Sir George Fenwielc, Captain Fraser, and Messrs F. O. Bridgman, W. Clarke, 4 S. Galbraith, E. C. llazlett, J. MTntosh, J. A. Park, S. K. Sleigh, and D. E. Theomin. Sir George Fenwick said he thought they should pass a special vote of thanks to the directors and officers of the Union Steam Ship Company, the Huddart, Parker Company, and tho passengers, who had subscribed so liberally to tho society’s funds. This was seconded by Mr G. L. Denniston, and carried by acclamation.
