PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the, Palmerston Borough Council, was held on Monday; present—the Mayor (Mr Hopkins), Cra Stenliousc, Gordon, Barclay, Black, Stewart, Cameron, and M’Kenncy. The Secretary of the local branch of tho Blanket Society wrote taking exception to ilie statement in last report that the Blunket Society had hold a plain and fancy dress ball in tho Town Hall without receiving permission from the council for the use of the hall. Tho writer stated that tho Dancing Club had run the ball on its extended night, and handed over the proceeds to the Blunket Societv. —Ur Black; Has the Dancing Club the power to hand over the hall to others, on the night they have it engaged?—Cl MTveuney tan an official of the Dancing Club or quadrille assembly) said the Blunket Society approached tile club for the hall for that night. It was the usual extended night, and the club decided to run the dance and band over the proceeds to tho Blunket Society ladies, provided they supplied the refreshments. —Cr Cameron; The Blunket Society in that way got the hall at reduced rates, as the Dancing Club lias the hall on Wednesday evenings on special terms. —Tho Mayor thought application should have been made to the council for the hall. —Cr Stewart: Wo must abide by our rules.—Cr Stenhouse; If the Dancing Club ran the ball mid handed over the proceeds it seemed to have been within its rights.—Cr Cameron; Other societies might now do the same, and •’et tho hull at reduced rates. —The notice advertising tho ball was road.—On the motion of Cr Barclay, tho matter was overlooked this time, it being understood that application should first be made to the council in future for the ball. Robert Bryce wrote asking the council to reconsider las application for repairs to his scoop, which, bo said, was used solely for council work.—Received. The tender of C. Cook (the only one received) was accepted for fencing between the reservoir reserve and Mr J. Bhilips’s. Tho Otago Hospital Board stated the levyon Palmerston Borough would be £l3l Bs. Received. The Otago Provincial Court of tile Exhibition applied for a grant of £ls towards tho upkeep of the court.—Orantcd.-f-Cr Black reported on his lecent visit a.s a delegate, to the Exhibition Committee. The Eastern District Sub-union of the Rugby Union applied for permission to charge Is admission to adults at football matches on the Palmerston Recreation Ground.— Granted, the sub-union to state the number of days required. Sir F. D. Bell wrote asking for donations to a memorial in commemoration of the late Bid me Minister. —Received. Mrs Massey wrote thanking the council tor messages of condolence. —Received. Tho Otago Expansion League invited the Mayor to the annual pre-sessiona! meeting of local members of Parliament.—Received. S. Grey applied to have water laid on to his house, which was just outside the town boundary .—Cr Barclay suggested tapping the pipe on the boundary road, as they could not tup the main, which was nearer the house.—Thu Mayor stated there was already an elbow on the 'main which they could tap.—Cr Barclay; That is private property, as arc the pipe lines which load from it. — Ci Cameron gave notice that the motion piohibitmg the tapping of the water main be rescinded. The Runanga Borough Council asked for support of a proposal that Hie Government provide pensions for sufferers from infantile paralysis.— Received. Mrs Mayer, secretary- of the local Blunket Society, applied for a donation.—Received. It was resolved that application be made for the usual Government grants for roads. The Foreman of Works reported having cleaned the channels On several streets, and done repairs and alterations as instructed. Accounts amounting to £6G Ids 4d were passed for payment. The Works Committee was instructed to get a culvert repaired near Mr Spillanc’a, and to plough, scoop, and repair the street in front of Mr Warren's garage. Tho application from tho Roman Catholic authorities to have water laid on to their new section was granted. Cr Stewart moved —“That the action of the clerk bo approved in granting Mrs Le Fevre the use of Hie Town Hall for Tuesday evenings, in place of Thursday evenings, seeing that she had booked 30 extra Saturday nights.”—After discussion, it was decided that Mrs Le Fevvo be granted the hall for Tuesday and Saturday evenings for pictures. After a long discussion fresh charges were agreed upon for tile use of the supper room, as follows;—Smoke concerts, 15s; committee meetings, 2s Od in daytime and 5s in evening; commercial travellers, 5s and 7s Od. It was decided to erect a post on a bank near Mrs Patterson’s house, and hang a stoam lantern on it on dark nights.
