WAR WITH THE RIFFS
SPANISH OFFENSIVE. GENERAL DE RIVERA TO DIRECT. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. PARIS, June 8. (Received June 8, at 8.25 p.m.) The correspondent of Le Temps at Morocco states that, the Spanish forces will begin operations in 10 days against Abd-e! Krim’s capital, Adjir. An expeditionary force will land in the neighbourhood of Alhucemas covered by the fleet and the air force. It is stated that General de Rivera will personally direct operations on board a cruiser.—Reuter. FRENCH OUTPOST RELIEVED. THE DEFENDERS EXHAUSTED. PARIS, June 7. (Received Jnne 8, at 7.10 p.m.) Advices from Fez state that a French mobile column relieved 60 exhausted defenders of the Sker outpost which had; been surounded since April 27 and to which aeroplanes had regularly supplied food, ammunition, and ice for water. The relief was carried out under an artillery barrage. The rescuers destroyed the post. LONG CAMPAIGN AHEAD. TURKS AS GUN-RUNNERS. LONDON, May 27. Although the French are gradually clearing the country north of Wergha, the Riffs continue to penetrate everywhere on the French front, says a message from Tangier. Only one tribe has surrendered, but the danger of a general rising has disappeared, though the French have a long campaign ahead involving the maintenance of a large force. Communist pamphlets, printed in Arabic, which have been found on Riff prisoners, prove the close relations between Moscow and Abd-el Krim. According to a message from Madrid Turks are actively engaged in gun-run-ning on the Moroccan coast, and every available Spanish warship is being mobilised to intercept them.
