CHESS.

NEW ZEALAND CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. Tho chess telegraph match Otago v. Canterbury, which commenced on May 30. was continued on Saturday evening. At 11 o’clock when play ceased only two games — those in which Messrs Balk and Wright wore engaged for Otago—wore unfinished. Those will be submitted to the adjudication board in Auckland, but will not affect a decision in Otago’s favour, the score of finished games being 8 !, to 6i, as from tho favourable position of Mr Wright’s game, ho should be either awarded a win or a draw, which will make Otago’s win assured. Among tho notable games played was that of Mr J. J. Marlow who on the first night’s play captured a bishop for a pawn, Mr Marlow pressed his opponent very hard on the second night and scored tho first win for Otago. Mr H. S. Myers also had a brilliant win. In the middle game, by skilful manoeuvring he captured his opponent’s queen without any material compensating loss, and Canterbury resigned a few moves later. Mr T. M. Gillies acted as bmipiro, and groat credit is due to him for the capable manner in which ho discharged his duties, and to 1 the telegraphist who operated tho wires without a hitch.
