ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. 1 ; , (Pee United Press Association.! WELLINGTON. June 5. ‘ I No better game of Association football;,’ has been seen in Wellington for the last 12 months than the meeting between terbury and Wellington representatives today. Conditions were against good foe*-” 5 ball. A southerly buster was blowing, heavy rain falling, and the ground was water-logged. Yet the open game played : by both sides, particularly by Canterbury, l '; was delightful to watch. The toss of the' coin enabled Canterbury to open -with the wind behind them, and inside the first minute Isles opened their account with at" good shot, which Ewing should have saved. 1 ' Makng the pace fast Canterbury hemmed. Wellington in, and six minutes later TrOttert 1 added another goal, Ewing having nq chance. Wellington strained hard to reply. Ballard, after a solo run, giving a great-’ centre, but Wilson beat the centre forward. A dropping shot from Irvine was tipped over the bar, but, pressing hard, Welling- ; ton were rewarded by Ballard getting':,, through, and beating Wilson with a strongdrive. Canterbury 2 goals, Wellington 1 goal. Canterbury’s third goal came through,.: Isles, who secured and had a clear shot through Greenaway cleverly drawing tha defence. Ewing mulled the shot badly and should have saved easily. Trotter added a fourth from a rebound from the crossbar... The half-time score was Canterbury 4 goals, Wellington 1 goal. The second spell favoured Wellington, but,., the home forward work was not so good, the right wing being weak. At one period Canterbury were under constant pressure, end though Wellington wore hovering round . the goa| they could not score. Several ’ shefs were accidentally diverted by the visi- 1 ters’ defence. M‘Kee reduced the lead for Wellington with a lovely shot 30 yards oat, e centre from Ballard making an opening. On* scored but was given offside, and the Wellington backs crossing over the halfway; lino let Trott through for a solo run which , grave the visitors another goal. Orr then,' netted from a corner forced by Ballard. Canterbury 5 goals, , Wellington 3 goals, Sound defence held Wellington at bay, and the game ended in a deserved victory for Canterbury. SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ MATCH. (Bee United Bbess Association.) WELLINGTON, June 3.. An Association football representative match at Wellington to-day between St. Patrick’s College and the Balmerston North District High School ended in a win for the visitors by 3 goals to 1 goal. Smxlie, Nairn, and Young scored for the winners, end Simpson for the losers. Y.M.C.A. MATCH. The Christchurch Y.M.C.A. football team, yesterday played the Dunedin Y.M.C.A. Second Grade team. The game was fast, and much more interesting than the scores of E to 1 would indicate. Christchurch won the toss and elected to play against the sun, . a handicap that was much against them, as the goalkeeper had little chance of stop- • ping the hard shots played at him whilst under this disadvantage. The game was keen and fast, the Dunedin forwards being particularly effective. Hie disparity in scores was largely due to the tact that Christchurch had a team of excellent individual players, but they suffered in team work, not having played together before. For Christchurch the cut-standing players were the left wing. Nelson, the centre forward, Deans, and Ward at centre holf. Cook, in goal, played a fine game, bat had some impossible shots to stop. For Dunedin White scored 4 goals.- Taylor 2, Cullen 1, and MacPherson 1. For Christchurch Nelson vras the scorer. Mr W. Sudden was the referee. L , At a social gathering tendered later ia ; tie evening, Messrs Stubbs, sen., and Hanna welcomed the visitors, Mr Ward responding on behalf of Christchurch. Special mention was made of the fact that in the present season J. White had scored at least: two goals in every match.
