WAITAKI LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. There were present at the annual meeting of the 'Waitaki Licensing Committee held in Walmate on Tuesday;—Messrs E. D. Mosley, S.M. (chairman), W. Inder, A. M’Phersou, C. G. Holmes, C. Coventry, and W. E. Evans. Transfers were granted and new licenses issued in respect of the following hotels: Ulencco Hotel, Glenavy, from J.W. Halliday to T. Twomey; Waimate Hotel, Waimate, from T. Twomey to 0. W. Halliday; btudhohnc Hotel, Studholme Junction, from E. A. Craighead to M. J. O’Uonnell; Hoyal Hotel, Saseby, from Robert Kirk to William Collins. New licenses were issued in respect of the following hotels Masonic Hotel, St. Andrews, "to Matthew Coffey Kurow Hotel, Kurow, Maurice Lawlor; Duntroon Hotel, Duntroon, to Henry Cadery; Ancient Briton. Hotel, Naaeby, to B. A. Winchester. Accommodation licenses were issued in respect of the following:—David lingers, Georgetown Hotel, Georgetown; John Canaijiian, Patearoa Hotel, Patearoa. Transfers were granted and accommodation licenses issued in respect oi the following ; —Omarama Hotel, Omarama, from S. Woods to M. Leydon; Otago Central Hotel, Hyde, from W. T. Matthews to P. Lane. Renewals of licenses were granted to: Annie Craighead, Royal Hotel, Waimate; George Mitchell, Empire Held, Waimate; Dennis Coffey, Criterion Hotel, Waimate; John Boyle, Terminus Hotel, Hakataraxuea; J. 1. lie Malmanche, Railway Hotel, Kurow ; Cordelia Mansfield Leech, Makikihi Hotel, Makikihi; Elizabeth Stanley, Stanley’s Hotel, Macrae’s Flat; Annie Harrington, Ranfurly Hotel. Ranfurly; Robert Kirk, Royal Hotel, Kaseby. Renewals of accommodation licensed were granted to: —Thomas Srjllivan, Railway Hotel, Waihao Forks; T. E. OConnor. Wai-pia-ta Hotel, Waipiata; A. Messcnt, Railway H.otei. Oturehuu; Mary Elspeth White, Crown Hotel, Wcdderburn; F. S. Tcraplclon, Pass Hotel, Kyeburn Diggings. Samuel Amos Pluck (Mr W. G. Tweedy) applied for a renewal of the accommodation license for the Redcliff Hotel, Ikawai.—The police report stated that this house had received a bad name, lor after-hour trading. For‘the applicant, Mr Tweedy staled that dances were held in the neighbourhood of the hotel to winch liquor was taken, and sometimes cases of intoxication occurred for which Ibe Redcliff Hotel, being the nearest to the dance hall, was blamed. The Chairman said the committee was far from satisfied with the conduct of the hotel. —The application was adjourned. The Chairman further stated that a good deal of after-hour trading was being carried on in Waimate that was a disgrace to the district, and must end. The inhabitants of the district were as much to blame as the licensees. They all knew the law ruling in this country, and should keep to it. “I am not sneaking as the chairman of the Licensing Committee now," said Mr Mosley, "but as the stipendiary magistrate for the district, and if licensees come before me their licenses will bo endorsed, and if there is a second occurrence out they go.
