At an excited meeting of the Chinese Cliamher of Commerce at Shanghai 15,000 students and workers coerced the chairman of the chamber to sign a notice calling a general strike to-day. Tile meeting subsequently passed extremist resolutions demanding, inter alia, the boycott of foreign banks and bank notes, the control of, the municipal police to be placed in Chinese hands, the withdraws! of foreign warships from ,th© Nnng-pu River, the release of the arrested men. the punishment of the murderers of students and workmen, compensation for sufferers, and the suspension of payment of municipal taxes. When the strike was due the student* began to attack the police, who met them with a deluge from a fire hose, to which the rioters responded with paving stones, injuring a number of police and onlookers. Tlie police fired, seriously’ wounding five jjersons, after which the crowds dispersed. The - students arc endeavouring to enlist the co-operation of tho workers in the essential services, for which the Municipal Council is prepared. Altogether 18 rioters were shot, of whom three succumbed. There were minor disturbances in the outlying districts during the evening, some arrests being made. There were no casualties.
