NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION.
MELTING OF DIRECTORS. Tho weekly meeting of tho directors ot the New Zealand ami South Seas Exhibition Company was held last night, and was attended hy Messrs J. Sutherland Ross (chairman), H. L. Tapley, C. Todd, W. R. Dayward, I’. L. Halsted, C. Speight, A. Barnett, T. Somerville, and tl. F. Sincock. Tho rccoinniendations arrived at by a sub-committee of tho Music Committee in conference with representatives of the board of directors were approved. Mr J. 11. Plumb, head of a firm in Philadelphia, wrote expre-ssing regret that ho could not make arrangements for an exhibit of his goods at the Exhibition. He understood that there would ho some woodchopping contests, and ho would ho glad to donate a gold medal to the winner of tho principal event and also a selected Plumb Tasmanian axe to the winners of some, of the important chopping events. — The offer was accepted with thanks. . The Works Committee stated that a report by Mr Hainsworth that tho special committee set up try tho directors had decided that tho inside of Iho buildings should bo washed a pale green tint had been approved. A report by Mr Simpson that arrangements wore being made for the hire of a tile crusher was approved. The Architect had submitted a plan of a portico for tho Art Gallery, and stated that the approximate cost would be about £360. As this price was considered too high tho architect was asked to prepare another plan of a portico at a much lower cost. Tho Architect submitted a. plan of sewerage drainage of the Exhibition buildings and stated that tho city engineer required the plan loft with him. 'The architect was informed that it was tho committee’s wish that the Exhibition Company’s part of tho work should bo carried out by contract. Tho plan was received. The architect was instructed to arrange for trucks and rails being transferred for use in tho locality of tho sports ground at tho earliest possible moment. It had been resolved that the directors be recommended to give effect to the architect’s recommendation to have two houses erected for use as transformer stations at a cost of £liO each, plus au additional amount of £2O each for concrete floors and naintipg—making a total cost of £260. The architect had been instructed to arrange for a supply of town water to lie paid on to the fernery through a lin pipe. It Was decided to recommend the directors to instruct the architect to call for tenders for the main entrance pavilion. Tho committee had resolved that a Totter of congratulation be sent to Mr J. Loudon on his appointment as chairman of (ho Otago Harbour Board. Tbo report was adopted. The Publicity Committee recommended the directors to invite tenders for rights to advertise on the outside fence fronting Union street, this space being approximately (l.Toft long, and on such other parts of the, fence as the directors may deem it advisable. A report in connection with the proposed booklet “Where To Stay and What To .See’’ was referred to the Housing Committee. Tho question of advertising on tho fence was referred to Mr Somerville and Mr Hainsworth for a report. The Horticultural Committee reported that it had resolved that letters of thanks be sent to all tho ladies who assisted in any way at the tree planting ceremony, also to Messrs Fletcher and Uovo for services rendered by them. The Chairman's explanation regarding the arrangement that had been come to with Ihe sports bodies for the top-dressing of the north end of the park was approved. The committee had resolved (hat the secretary write to the Amenities Society asking that body to plant a shrubbery and beautify the portion of unsightly ground at the south-west corner of Logan Park, which is outside of tho limits of the Exhibition Company's fence.—lt was resolved that the directors bo recommended to reserve the site, originally fixed for the Aquarium, ns tho approximate site for a model cottage. It was resolved (hat the directors be recommended to issue instructions prohibiting the public from taking dogs into the Exhibition grounds. The report was approved. The Transport Committee reported that it had discussed the question whether it should or should not undertake tho matter of the transport of passengers afler they had arrived in Dunedin. It had resolved that the chairman and general < manager interview the. president and secretary of the Taxi Drivers’ Association and any other motor bodies and report. It was stab'd that a number of motor Inis proprietors in tho North Island intended to send their buses to Dunedin during the currency of (he Exhibition. It was stated that the matter of reduced railway fares was being considered at railway headquarters in Wellington. A suggestion that a special express train should lie run on certain days of tho week from Lyttelton to Dunedin during the currency of the Exhibition would be referred to the head quarters of the Railway Department. The report was adopted. Tiie Housing Committee reported that the registrations of accommodation to date were eonsideved extremely satisfactory. A general discussion had ensued on various matters, and it had been resolved that it be a recommendation to the Publicity Committee to feature the accommodation question as soon as their campaign commences for tiie period of one month. Tim report was approved. The Executive Committee stated that Mr N. Kettle reported (hat owing to absence from the dominion Mr N. Kettle had suggested the anointment of Mr J. H. Edmundson as executive coimmssoncr in his place. It was resolved to ask Mr Edmondson to act accordingly. Six tenders had boon received for the electric lighting (not including fittings) of the Art Gallery, and it had been decided to accept that of the Stewart Isbister Electrical Company, whose price was £215 15s. ’.I he Marlborough Progress League wrote asking if executive exhibits of primary products would carry tho concession given to farmers’ products. It was resolved to allow free space up to 15 per cent, of tho total as laid down in a circular to local bodies, the matter of form of spaco to be left, to tbo general manager and secretary to arrange. Sir C. J. Parr wrote stating that arrangements would bo made for adequately policing the Exhibition. Messrs Courts (Bombay) bad cabled asking that their successors iu business (Jccna Company) be appointed Exhibition shipping agents, Bombay, It was resolved to comply with the request upon the secretary being satisfied by inquiry from local shipping houses that (hero was no reason to the contrary. The Chamber of Commerce (Dunedin) wrote asking the directors to support the representation to u.S.S. Co. to withdraw tho Mararoa from tho ferry service in September. ’1 he Secretary, Department of Industries and Commerce, wrote asking permission to erect a shed at the rear of No. 5 building, to be used for receiving and unpacking of cases of exhibits for tho New Zealand Government Court, iho buildings to be removed prior to the opening of the Exhibition. It was resolved to grant permission subject to approval of tho plans by the Works Committee. Tbo report was approved. Tho Organising Secretary of tho women s section reported that on 31 ay 22 an ‘‘at home” was given by tho Executive Committee at the Otago Women’s Club. About 200 women accepted tho invitation, and, after tea was dispensed, Mrs Ross, Lady Ferguson, and Mrs Tapley addressed tho gathering, explaining the women’s activities and the need for funds to cquip_ (ho section and adequately display (ho exhibits. It was tho intention of the executive to make the women’s section tho gem of tho Exhibition. There was a generous response to tho appeal, with the result that with two anonymous donations —one of £IOO. the other of £so—ovor £2OO was now in tho bank-, and £2OO had vet to come in. Further plans were being made for tho raising of tiie next £SOO. Two members of the Executive Committee, with tho representatives of the Committee on the Mode! House, waited on the Reserves Committee of the City Council regarding the possibility of iho council buying the house when tho Exhibition wa s over. Tho deputation was well received, and tho committee on the model house was now encouraged to proceed with the finding of tho money to finance the scheme. Altogether 34 private houses which had registered at the Official Accommodation Bureau had been visited be members of the committee. Two of these homes wore very poor, but (he remaining 32 were comfortable and clean, and a good spirit prevailed. Special and extra accommodation for women, girls, and children during the rush holiday season was being dUcussed by tho committee. Many inquiries were reaching the office regarding exhibits for display, and plans for interesting working exhibits were being made.
