Steel visited Oamaru yesterday for the purpose of conferring with tho representatives of various local bodies in connection with tho Otago Court at the Exhibition. Mr Ernest E. Jenks, managng director of tho Alexander Hamilton Institute of Australia. loft Sydney this week en route to New Zealand. Mr Jenks, who is a son of Dr Jeremiah Jenks, a well-known economist, will bo in Dunedin towards tho end of next week. ■ Father P. F, Cullen and Father J. Butler (Wellington), and Father M. Klemick (Marton), who had boon attending the jubilee celebrations in connection with lliowfoly Cross College, Mosgiel, left Dunedin by tho second express yesterday for the north. Mr W. A. Thomson has been temporarily appointed demonstrator in clinical den tistry at tho Dental School for the remainder of tho current year in place of Mr G. H. Parkinson, who is on leave of absence doing post graduate work in America. From a number of applicants, the Waitaki High School Board of Governors has made the following temporary appointments: —F’or the Girls’ School, Mrs P. Rushton, formerly of Stratford Technical High School; and at tho Boys’ School, Mr Brian Blnckmore, of Timaru. For the permanent position (C grade) at tho Girls’ School, Miss M. S. Watt, of Dannovirko High School, was appointed. The Bov. T. Paterson, of tho Kirwoe Presbyterian Church, has received word from the registrar of tho Melbourne College of Divinity that ho has boon successful in passing the final examination for the degree of Bachelor of Divinity. Mr Paterson, who, is a brother of the Rev. John Paterson, lately of St. Paul’s, Christchurch, received his education at Canterbury College and Knox College, Dunedin. At the Christchurch competitions (says a Press Associat ion telegram) Ihe following Dunedin and Invercargill competitors were successful: —Recitation, New Zealand author, lady or gentleman—Miss Sara Aitken (Invercargill), 88 points, 1; Miss Anita Winkol (Dunedin), 87 points 2; Miss Jessie Griffiths (Dunedin), 86 points, 3. In tho recitation for girls between 16 and 18 years Miss Mollie (Dunedin) was second with 81 points. Mr Arthur Winter, a London director of tho firm of Messrs Jas. Buchanan and Co., loft Dunedin by tho second express yesterday for Christchurch. He was accompanied by Mr R. Matthews, Australian representative of tho firm. Mr Winter, who is visiting New Zealand.and Australia tor tho first time, will spend about two months in this country. Pto informed a Daily Times reporter that in his opinion New Zealand was one of the most attractive countries in' tho world. Ho had been particularly impressed with the scenery in the various districts which ho had already visited, and ho was delighted with the hospitality shown during his 'stay in Dunedin and Wellington. Ho carried away with him happy recollections of tho citv and the business people with whom he had come in contact. Air Winter will later visit Napier, Gisborne, Rotorua, and Auckland.
