FIRES.
BOARDING HOUSE DESTROYED. (Peb United Pbess Association.) • WAIROA, April 21. Another disastrous fire occurred shortiy before midnight last night, when a largo 35-roomed boarding house, owned by the Wairoa Meat Company, was totally destroyed. There were 51 boarders, employees at the freezing works most of whom 6aved their belongings; but the lessee, Mrs Reese, lost practically everything, including a large sum of money paid by the men during the week-end. The buildings, fittings, and furniture were insured for £3175. LOCAL CALLS. Three calls were received by the city's fire department yesterday. The first was recorded at 12.45 p.m., when the Roslyn Brigade attended an outbreak in Mr Sherriff's butchery business in High gate. Very little damage was done. The City Brigade ottended a call, received at 1.7 p..m, to the City Corporation yards in Ward street, where the cab of a Thomycroft motor lorry was found to be on fixe. The cab was practically destroyed, but the body of the machine escaped damage. The third call, received at 2.10 p.m., was from the vicinity of the Roslyn Woollen Mills. The City and Roslyn Brigades proceeded to the scene, but were unable to locate any outbreak, la was stated afterwards that a fire had occurred in a washhouse of a residence in Pitcairn street, and that the outbreak had been extinguished by the occupants of the dwelling.
