Replying to the Engineering Trade Union’s demand for an increase of 20s a week, the employers submitted proposals to the 40 trade unions concerned suggesting increased hoars in an attempt to reduce the cost of production and to counter foreign competition. At present the men work 47 hours a week at the rate of Is an hour plus a bonus of 10s a week. The employers propose 50 hours at Is with a bonus of 12s. The sub-committee of the trade unions is amazed at the proposal, which is being submitted to a full executive meeting. This was adjourned till May 20.—A. and N.Z. Cable. SHIPBUILDERS AND MINERS EFFORTS TO PROMOTE REVIVAL. LONDON. April 26. (Received April 27, at 5.5 p.m.) The seriousness of industrial stagnation largely duo to foreign competition is reflected in the decision of the shipbuilding unions to join the employers in investigate ing a means of reviving the industry. The miners are holding a national conference at Blackpool on May 30 to receive a report from th© employers and men’s committee on the stops which have been taken to revive the industry. The same meeting will discuss a proposal to restore the Triple Alliance.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
