ROAD MAINTENANCE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—May I take this opportunity to congratulate the Government on the very great effort it is making to repair the roads and get then, up to ns near perfection as possible'/ In doing this I see the Government has been very fortunate, no doubt after a very great struggle, in having transferred from Riga to the West Coast one Vulcan lorry—or is it two lorries? I suppose, judging by the time they were working on the Riga front that this fortunate place has roads now equal to any billiard table. What a blessing to the West that it is being favoured with the services of two lorries next in turn. But, sir, what of us? Are the lorries going all over New Zealand? If so, when does Otago’s turn come—first or last > Perhaps If we pressed hard enough the Vulcan people might be persuaded to manufacture a few more of those machines. The adverfisjments we have been reading about them for so long have set many ■wondering, I am sure, why the good work they are able to do has not been sufficient to compel the Government to order quite a number for road repairing. If it did so we should then be able to look forward to the time when the Dunedin-Waikouaiti toad would be worth travelling over.—l am, etc., Otago Daily Reader. Timaru, February 10.
