N.Z. AND SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION.

MEETING OF DIRECTORS. The weekly meeting of the directors of (he New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Company was held last night, and was attended by Messrs J. Sutherland Ross (chairman), A. Ban.ett, C. Todd, and T. Somerville. Owing to the fact that there was not a quorum, the business of the meeting was not confirmed, but a special meeting will be held on Tuesday to confirm it Tho Consul-General for France (Auckland) wrote stating that he had written numerous letters to the French Foreign Office concerning the Exhibition. He had succeeded in interesting the National Office of Commeice, and he suggested that the company should write to the head of tho State Department concerning the Strasburg mission. The writer had good reason to believe that the great associations of French artists (painters and sculptors) would exhibit at Dunedin, and (hat probably a French section of education would be organised there. He thought this efforts to obtain the French nation’s representation at Dunedin would be crowned with success.—The Chairman said a letter had been sent to Strasburg. PUBLICITY COMMITTEE.

The Publicity Committee repotted as follows: —With reference to the advertising scheme it was resolved—“ That notwithstanding the proposed conference this committee wishes to impress upon tho directors the desirability of commencing the Australian scheme at any rate without delay.”—Received. COMMITTEE OF DIRECTORS. The report of the Executive Committee of Directors is as follows:—The Minister of Stamp duties wrote stating that £55 stamp duty on the Harbour Board lease will be refunded by vote on the Estimates next; session. The Department of Industries and Commerce wrote asking that 5000 folders be given for distribution at Wembley.—lt was decided to supply same on payment therefor at cost. The Dunedin City Corporation wrote stating that it had issued valuation notice (£1075) for Exhibition §ite, etc.—The secretary was instructed to ask the council for remission in terms of the Finance Act, 1024. The Southland League suggested that the directors join it in representation to Union Steam Ship Company that time Is ripe for resuming Sounds excursions—The secretary was instructed to write to the Union Steam Ship Company endorsing the suggestion. The Otago Women’s Club wrote regarding accommodation in Exhibition.— Referred to the general manager to confer with the secretary, Otago Women’s Club in matters of detail.'—Received. WORKS COMMITTEE.

The Works Committee's report read, inter alia“The General Manager reported that the directors had decided to adopt the sft candle lighting scheme for the motor pavilion as outlined by Air Lough, electrical engineer. A letter was read from the architect reporting on the lighting scheme. It was resolved Unit the directors bo recommended to have the work carried out in accordance with Air Lough’s scheme Fire Prevention Service: The Architect reported that he hud received a letter from the city engineer advising that he had given instructions to have the work of laying the extension of the water mam gine on with at once.— Letters were read from the superintendent of the Dunedin Fire Drlgade regarding a Vigilant automatic fire alarm and free railage for chemical fire extinguishers.— Noted. It was resolved that the architect be asked to prepare an estimate of the cost of increasing the platform or stage in the festival hall by sft. The architect submitted a plat, of the art gallery.—Deferred to the general manager and architect to bring up a report regarding exits from the art g illory.—The plan was approved, and it was lesolvcd that the directors lie recommended to call for tenders either witli the annfcxc for photographic works attached to or detached from the gallery. The Architect submitted plan of storm water drainage. The method of carrying out the work was discussed, and it was resolved that architect got the plan passed by the Drainage Hoard and submit a further report.—Deferred to sub-commit-tee to consider details ot plan and report. It was suggested that the asbestos sheeting on the outside of iho buildings should lie left unpainted, am! that woodwork he painted in some harmonising colour.— Deferred to architect to pick out a section of the buildings for committee’s inspection next week. MUSIC COMMITTAL.

Tho report ot the Music Committee was as tallows: “Iho recommendation regarding visiting choirs was approved, and tuc seerotary authorised to write accordingly, llio recommendation as to cutilmg to .London tor oriiis of teertuiu choral conductors was not confirmed. Mho remainder of recommendations in report and sub-reports wore approved. The report of tho meeting held on January 12 was read by tho chairman. A suggestion as recommended by the Music Committee regarding the formation of a paid orenestra was adopted. Mho recommendation that Mr Gustavo Slapolfski bo for terms of certain choral conductors was adopted. Consideration of the programme was deterred. The committee was imonned that consideration by the directors of the proposed programme had been deferred. Opening ceremony : It was reach ed that the Exhibition ode be Sir 1C H. Cowan’s "Song of ’thanksgiving.” it was resolved that the secretary of the Exhibition Choir be asked to supply the committee with a full report, including (X) practices, (2) strength, and (5) efficiency of the choir, and that Air Gale bo asked personally to supplement the report. The following were suggested as choir works for promenade concerts: “Bolls of St. Michael" (Stewart), “Moonlight” (tanning), “Song of the Vikings” (Fanning). It was resolved that the committee is entirely in favour of putting on these lighter works provided they are assured that it will not interfere with tho study of tho four heavier works, and that the directors be asked to grant authority for the purchase of these three lighter works.-—Re-ceived.

HORTICULTURE COMMITTEE. The report of the Horticulture Committee road, inter alia'The chairman reported regarding the requirements of the City Council in tho matter of fencing. A letter was rend from Sutton and Sons, England, advising the despatch of seeds for the Exhibition. A memo, was read from the director af amusements suggesting that three-quarters of an acre should bo set aside tor school garden plots. The secretary was instructed to write to the Hoad Masters’ Association bringing tho suggestion under its notice. It was reported that tho following clause had been referred from the Works Committee’s report for consideration by the Horticulture Committee: “It is suggested that a number of trees should bo planted so ns to obscure tho view of the cement works.” It was resolved that this committee has no recommendation to make in the matter. It was resolved that the directors be recommended to have the road to the fernery formed as soon as possible, and tho borders fenced with wire netting. It was resolved that the directors be recommended to approve of the formation of a native garden round about the fernery. Tho chairman reported that he had met Captain Ellis, of the Forestry Department, and that he had inspected the hillside at T.ogan Park. It was resolved that a letter be sent to Captain Ellis asking him to put in a demonstration plantation on tho hillside, and also a small demonstration nursery on the flat.—Received.
