NUMEROUS SUICIDES

/ SUFFERERS FROM COLD. BETTER WEATHER IN AMERICANEW YORK, December 29. New York experienced warmer weather to-day, after a Sunday that was the third coldest winter dav in the past 50 years. Mountainous districts in the upper portion of the State registered as low as 26 degrees below zero. A dozen suicides are said to be due to the fearful misery caused by the extreme weather. Fifteen persons died as the result of inhaling illuminating gas, the saddest case being the wholesale suicide of one family. Five people, John Horrocks, his wife, brother-in-law, and two daughters were found dead in a room hermetically sealed, with gas pouring in from all jets. < Chicago firemen responded to 400 alarms on Sunday, which ware due mostly to fires, overheated flues, and furnaces.
