{Peb United Peess Absocxation.) AUCKLAND, January 9. The Union Company’s chartered steamers Trelyon and Sheaf Mount arrived from San Francisco to-day, having done the 5600 miles within three hours of each other. The former left six hours ahead of tho Sheaf Mount, and arrived about three hours ahead. Arthur William Wilshirs was fined £l2 10s in the Police Court for attempting to bribe a Customs official by offering the latter some silver, and for failing truly to answer questions in regard to goods. The amount of tho duty was small, said the Collector of Customs, and but for the attempted bribery thpra would have been no court case. Defendant denied attempting bribery, saying ho merely asked tho official to have a drink. Defendant is a working man. WTSLTiTNGTON, January 9. Cabinet mot to-day and approved of the application of the Wellington Education Board for a special grant towards the budding of tho manual training centre and cookery school in Wellington South, and also made substantial grants for large additions to tho Gisborne High School and for the Ashburton East School.
