HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS.
CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S! AWARDS. On Thursday morning- three members qf the Otago Caledonian Society, Messrs P. W. Breen (president), A. H. Tonkinson (exprosident), apd J. S. Douglas {vice-presi-dout) visited the Otago Boys’ High School for the purpose of presenting the Begg Cup and trophies won at "the society’s recent sports meeting. The cup is competed for annually by pupils of secondary schools at (ho annual sports meeting of the society. The representatives were cordially received by the rector (Mr Morrpll) and his staff, and alter the pupils were assembled in the school hall Mr Morrell called on the visitors to make the presentations. Mr Breen congratulated the school on again winning tno gup, which they had not held since 1920, and referred to the true sporting spirit which shpuld enter into these competitiops. giving as examples incidents which occprrecj at local amateur athletic meetings, in which A. -EL Porritt, the Rhodes Scholar at present at Oxford, sot such a splendid example to all athletes. He also urged the boys at all times to do their best for their school, and to remember that the prize was not the goal, hut a means to stimulate a healthy competitive spil'it amongst the boys, and to got the most enjoyment out of their sport. Mr Tonkinson, in presenting the Begg Cup to the winning team, referred to the objects of the society, especially in fostering the physical development of youth, sp as to create true manhood. Mr Douglas presented the medals to the winning team of the relay race, and emphasised the importance of physical exercise, eulogising the work of Mr J. P. Northey in training the pupils of the school. A vigorous haka by the boys closed the proceedings.
