HEROIC RESCUE
ENTOMBED MINER’S FORTITUDE. LONDON, November 12. The Daily Herald tells a thrilling story of heroism in the rescue of two miners, M’Nally and Place, who had been buried by a fall of stone at Murton colliery, Durham. To reach the entombed men their companions, Elwich and Wilson, drove a small opening, and then worked their way to Place. They released him after working for an hour. The rescue of M'Nolly was more difficult, because his right hand had become wedged between the fallen baulks and the removal of the baulks would havo imperilled him and also tho two rescuers. Meanwhile other falls were occurring at short intervals. As a last hope the rescuers suggested severing M’Nally’s hand. A tourniquet was applied to the wrist, and then three fingers were cut through with a chisel. M'Nally remained conscious and crawled througli the escape hole with his rescuers. A few minutes later another fall completely blocked tho exit.
