CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting hfeld at Balclutha on Tuesday was attended by Crs A. T. Harris (chairman), D. It. Jock, K. M-’lndoo, W. S. Thomson, T. Maginneea, W. J. M'Kenzie, Jos. Mosley, Wm. Lawson, G. Hay, and Jas. Gumming. CONDOLENCE.

Before proceeding to business the Cha.trman referred to tho death of a former councillor and chairman (the late Mr J. RMitchell). He called on Cr Gumming, who had been associated on the council with Mr Mitchell, to move a resolution.—Cr Gumming said that when he came on tho council eomo 20 years ago Mr Mitchell was then a member. The deceased wns n‘ fair-minded and just man, not only in business life, but in private life, and was a man wbom tne councillor* in those days looked up to a» an example. Ho moved that the chairman, the clerk, and himself be appointed a committee to draw up ft suitable resolution to be forwarded to Mrs Mitchell. —Cr Mosley seconded, and tho motion was earned by members standing in silence. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr G. S. Gould), in the of ids report, stated that tho cost 9* the two Kuriwao Stream bridges, which, it was proposed to rebuild, should not cxoeed £O9O. Good progress was being made with tho erection of the bridge at Tweedio a Ford, Pam ah air a River, and he recommended that two extra spans _ of 20ft bo provided at tho Tuapoka end >i the bridge to provide for the free flow water in flood time. The cost of tho extra 49ft would be £22C. The bridge over tho Pomahaka was In a dangerous condition, and tho engineer recommended that the whole structure be renewed in Australian hardwood at an. approximate cost of £ISOO. The report also recommended tho replacement of a large wooden culvert near Waiwera, known ee Gorman's bridge, with a concrete pipe culvert at a cost of about £45. _ In regard to Gorman’s bridge, Or Thomson moved that the work be proceeded with as outlined in the report.—Agreed to. Or MTConrie moved that tho two extra spans, as suggested in the report for Twcedie’a Ford bridge, be gone on with, Agreed to.—Or IPKenzio then moved that the tender of £225 from Mr Knewstubb (the present contractor) be accepted for the work. —Seconded by Cr Gumming and earned, BALCLUTHA-CLTDEVALE ROAD.

Searlo Bios. (Owaka) wrote informing the council that they had carted the three trucks of metal from tho Owaka station to Owaka Valley ror-di They were pleased to be able to assist in this matter, hut objected to the attitude of others who used tho road more than they did, and ■would not assist. ■ Received. , , ~ , G. B. Stevenson (Waipahi), on behalf of the original petitioners wrote with regard to the metalling of the Waipahi-Pomahaka Downs road, which had been promised in the spring.—Writers to be informed that ■ the work would be put in hand during the coming month, the delay being caused by difficulty in securing a suitable convenient quarry. Alex. McLean (Chaslands) wrote claiming £0 damages as tho result of an accident on tho Maclennan bridge. Writer stated that he was driving with extreme care when tho accident happened, and stated that he would bo satisfied with the sum of £3. — Cr Lawson moved that the council disclaim any liability. Anyone could drive over tho bridge without accident by exercising sufficient caro.-r-Agrecd to. S. M. Park (secretary Otago Educv tion Board), wrote that the board was taking stops to acquire part of Lilly’s property at Rosebank as a High School site. ’lTicy were depositing tho trees being removed from the adjoining section in tho gully, but before tho work could bo proceeded with its was necessary that a culvert be put in, and they requested the council to • have this work carried out. —Cr Jack stated that the present culvert was quite sufficient for requirements, but if the board wished to pipe the gully the council would give them permission to do so. He moved that tho board me informed accordingly.— Agreed to, "the work to 'bo done to tho satisfaction of the engineer. R. Barron, stock inspector, Tapanui, gave, notice to destroy rabbits and ' noxious weeds under tho jurisdiction of the council.—Received, matter to receive early attention. W. A. Morris (West Gore) requested that the gates on the rood to his property near D. Purvis’s bo removed.—Left to the chairman and engineer to inspect and report to next moating. _ . , J. W. K. Anderson (Waipahi) wrote asking for information as to boundaries of roads leading to his property, and also as to -whether one mtopaper c&n force tuiothor to fence a road lino, which_ is seldom used, through bis property.—Received. E. P. Pannett (Clydevale) wrote oakangt for payment hof royalty on metal taken from his quarry—Payment to bo made for metal taken recently. „ ~ William Roy, Secretary South Otago Hospital Board, wrote requesting that tho rates on the board’s land at Owaka bo remitted for the current year in accordance with the provisions of the Rating Act.—Or Maginnoes moved that the board be informed that they were liable for rates up to September 30, 1924.—Agreed to. William Roy, Secretary South Otago Hospital Board, wrote objecting to the payment of the subsidy on grading and metalling the road to Owaka (Hospital. The board had agreed to pay half-cost of tho work providin'* tho total cost did not exceed £IOO, whereas the cost had been were agreed that a good job had been made, and some misunderstanding had evidently arisen in the matter of reading tho hoard s letter as to subsidy.—Cr Jack moved that a conference be hold with tho Hospital Board to see if some agreement could not do arrived at.—Agreed to, CrS Hay, Lawson, and Magtnncsa being appointed to confer with tho board. . . _ . „ _ O. Benzoni, District Engineer, N.Z.R., wrote that there was no objection to tho proposed colouring of crossing notices being given a trial.—Received, it being a recommendation to tho engineer to have the signs painted red. . . , „ j>, g. Lands, wrote that council’s account for’ rates on section 15, Wairuna Settlement, could not bo recognised, as tho applicant had withdrawn his application, and had never occupied the section.—Received. James O. Holm (Puketiro) made application for payment for work done clearing a treo on th© Gatlin’s Valley-Table Hill road. Cr Lawson moved that payment bo made. — Agreed to. . , _ ~. Hon. J. G. Coated, Munster of Pubhc Works, wrote noting application for £IOO grant towards metalling 30 chains on Diver’s road, Wairuna Settlement, and stated that the matter would receive consideration when tho Supplementary Estimates wore bing prepared,—John hkiio, M.P., also wrote in reference to this matter. —Re“SrW. Purkort, Chairman, Main Highways Board, wrote asking for detailed particulars to foundations of bridges which came under tho jurisdiction of the board. Received. S. J. Evans (clerk Westland County Council)" wrote asking council's co-oponation in having legislation put through this session to restore tho halves of revenue from timber and flax royalties now being taken by tho Forestry Department to the local bodies.— Cr Lawson moved that Mr EHi©, M.P., and tho Hon. J. G. Anderson bo communicated with asking their support in this matter. — Agreed to. Wm. M‘Lachlan (Tahakcpa) applied for two trucks of Logan’s Point metal for tho purpose of filling, boles in tho road to Ms mill.— Cr Lawson said ho was not satisfied with this application. ■" Mr M'Lachlan bad been asked to put on 100 yards of metal, and now applied for two trucks. He had certainly put on some gravel, but this was not satisfactory. Ho would move that tho council carry out tho work, the cost to bo charged to Mr M'Lachlan. —Agreed to, O. Pipeon and 15 other ratepayers of Chaslands petitioned council to have tho patches still umnotallcd on the Papatowp.iChaslands road, between Griffiths’ and Tantutu, put in hand at once. —Cr Lawson moved that petitioners bo informed that tho work would bo attended to. —Agreed to. Latta Bros. (Tabapoka) applied for permission to cress roadway witli tramway between sections 18 and 21, Tahakopa-Papa-towai road.—Granted under usual conditions. Joseph Hall (Kahuika) forwarded account for 13a fox clearing tree from Kahuika School road. —Passed for payment, G. M. Outsell (Chaalands) made application for payment for clearing scrub on Regan road ; also that five culverts bo put on same' road.—Writer to bo informed that there was no money available for tho work at present. Moil Gunn and two others (Toiro) applied to have tho unformed road leading to section 48, block I, Warepa, closed.—Mrs G. Turner wrote giving permission to close the road. — Hold over till next meeting.

H. A. Anderson (Valuation Departments wrote that council's request to have the ridings revalued hod been referred to the V*iusr-G«rkeTaL—Received.

J. H. Orawehaw (Medical Officer of Health, (Dunedin) forwarded circular letter and regulations regarding the sanitation of premises in •which food supplies for human consumption are prepared, packed, or stored.—Received.

G. Nauman (Puketiro) wrote requesting that the “thirds” accruing from sections 27, 23, 29, and 31, block XIV, Rimu Survey District, be spent on widening of track from culvert over Aurora Creek, and offering to undertake the work. —Engineer to look into the matter.

H. Simeon, manager South Otago Freezing Company, wrote requesting that the Finegand road be attended to before the season opened.—The Chairman said the road waa a good one, but it was too narrow.—Cr Thomson said .£3O had been spent on it last year, and it was considered a good road. Ho had not made any allowance on his estimates for the work litis year. Ho quite agreed that it was narrow in places, and would move that the engineer inspect and report at next meeting.—Agreed to. KAHUIKA’S "WANTS. A. 11. Peterson, secretary Kahuika _ Ratepayers’ Association!, forwarded a number of requests, as follows:—(1) That the road leading from Barnard’s piece to Kahuika _ School be graded, two or three culveits put in, and the road put in order before the Public Works Department tako it over; (2) that the road on Caberfeidh Hill was in a dangerous state, and recommended that the road. at Big Creek corner be widened, and a railing erected and two or three other sharp bends widened; (3) that consideration be given to the two or three chain® at J. Read’s entrance at Aurora Creek, and culvert put in where road is impassible; (4) that the council advise what “ thirds” and "fourths” are. available for Burnt Flat road from Martin’s section to Hialop’s; and that scrub on the same be cut and the road put in repair; (5) that the engineer notify residents when he is visiting the district. —Or Lawson moved that requests 1 and 3 be left to the engineer to attend to; that in reference to request No. 2, the engineer furnish a report; also on request No. 4. Agreed to. Regarding the final request, it was left to the engineer to attend to. GENERAL. It was decided to call for tender* lor the supply of dog collars fob next year.
