WORKERS’ EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION.

UNIVERSITY TUTORIAL CLASSES. (Contributed by the Bocal Branch.) MEETING OF DISTRICT COUNCIL. A meeting of the Otago District Council of the W.E.A. was held last Friday evening, with a satisfactory attendance of members. Apologies were received from the Director, Prbfcssor Woodthorpe, Mr Morrell, and the Rev. C. Jordan. A large budget of correspondence was read by the secretary and received. Mr August, from Southland, reported the conclusion of classes with a satisfactory advance in the quality of the work that had been accomplished. Oamaru Branch wrote enclosing a donation of £lO towards tutor’s travelling expenses. The Bootmakers’ Union, in renewing their affiliation, had increased their donation to two guineas. The Chairman (Dr Thompson) reported regarding two deputations that had waited on the Prime Minister and the Hon. C. J. P'arr (Minister of Education). They had been favourably received in both quarters, Mr Parr speaking very favourably of the work that was being done, and news had just come to hand that Cabinet had agreed to. increase the Government’s annual donation to the funds of the association throughout New Zealand from £SOO to £ISOO. Of this sum the local association gets a quarter, which will help very materially to strengthen and extend the work in the provinces of Otago and Southland. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr T. K. Sidey for acting on one deputation. A general discussion took place on the project of a W.EA. periodical, The New Zealand Highway. It was decided that in the opinion of the council it was highly important that such paper, be issued under and published from the headquarters of the Dominion Council, with the help of local enb-editors. The project will probably assume concrete form after the meeting of the Dominion Council next month.

A statement of finances was made by tho secretary, and it was decided to hand over £l4O to the University for the Tutorial Class Fund, and also the sum of £75 but of the Government giant for organising purposes. The District Organiser read his annual report on the work in Dunedin. It was decided that it be incorporated in tho matter for discussion at a combined meeting of the council and tho Tutorial Class Committee, to be held on November 19. It was reported that a summer class under Mr Wm. Martin B.Sc, on “The Natural History of Dunedin,' had made a promising start with 30 members. The library now contained over 700 books, 120 having been added during the year; of these boxes had been in uso by 12 classes, and only one class remained unprovided for, an omission it was hoped to remedy next year. JOTTINGS. The annual conference of the Dominion Tutors’ Association is being hold at Wellington on November 1 and 3, when representatives will be present from the four districts. The Summer School organised by tho Canterbury W.E.A., now in its fifth year, will ba ■ held this year at Springfield, on tho West Coast line, commencing on December 26. The fee is £3 for • the whole time, £2 for a week, or 8s a day. By leaving Dunedin by the early express, and changing at Rolleston, those going to camp can go right through in a day. It is hoped a considerable number of Dunedin students will be present at this school. Emboldened by the success of their undertaking of last year, the Southland teachers are holding another school this year at Stewart. Island, during the last week in January. Professors Shelley and Condlure will be the main'speakers, and Mr Wra. Martin, B.Sc., is to conduct Nature rambles in the afternoons. Those intending to go should forward an entry fee of 5s to Mr Griffiths, South School, Invercargill. The Auckland W.E.A. intended holding a week-end camp for Labour Day, some 40 members having enrolled for this purpose.
