ENGINEER'S REPORT., . J Mr B. B. Consfon (engineer Taieri County Council) reporta as follows for tho month, of October;— ’-3 MAIN HIGHWAYS. J l *1 Main Highway No. X is in fairly good order. Tho bridge at Adams’s, near Otokia, is, however, very far through, and presents a dilapidated appearance on an otherwise well-kept road. The section of road through Kaikorai Hiding was repaired with' riietal during the month, and regular attention has been given to the surfacing of the other portions of the road, eight men being employed part-time at the work. The expenditure, exclusive of cost of metal, which -wad. -

to another account, was £46 6a, and tho ■■ 1 length of road attended 10 miles. Main Highway No. 2 was in very good f, lj condition until the heavy rain of last week, when the clay sections of road were somewhat cut up. The Mosgiel-Gutram and 1. Outram-Sutton sections have been surfaced - i and dragged, and the Sutton to Middle- ‘ J march section repaired with gravel. The J expenditure was £52 10a, and the length t of road attended about 20 miles. GOVERNMENT GRANTS. The metalling of the Outran! ■ Riding || roads has been carried on, and the ’ contract that was let for the delivery of 600 tons of metal has been completed - . The, grading of the Out ram 10 Berwick road haathMb completed, and Currie’s road, Gr^ingwr’* road, and the Woodside-Maungatua road nova • been rounded up with the grader., ,-”h* metalling of the Kaikorai Valley road,'and. i the Green leland to Kaikorai Lagoon road has been completed, and part of the .Main ;n South road through. Kaikorai Riding iJhaa - been metalled. The expenditure on Government grant work for the month was. £4O jw • RIDING WORKS. The road from Whare Flat Schoolhdnsa s to Kay’e bridge has been surfaced and 'an - 18-inch box culvert inserted across the road at La mg’s gate. At the request of Mr 1 Acton Adams, who is paying the greater part of. the cost, the old road connecting' ■■ tho White Swamp road and tho Wingatui- 1 Abbotsford road was .surfaced and , cleared of boulders. This road is a short cut from ' ! I’oslyn to Wingatui Racecourse, being only Si miles from Roslyn to the main entrance, and is quite passable on a fine day for mbidg cars. The view of the Taieri Plain obtained from the road is very fine, and from thb ridge alongside a panoramic view of all tho Green Island and Brighton country is also obtained. Mr Acton Adams hopes to interest others in the road, and have further im- .i provemente made with the object of making sb this a one-way road to Wingatui on atea days. \ , • Centre road, Bast Taieri, has been repaired! with gravel from the Silverstream and - Milner's pit. The contractor has carted 066 *’ about 200 yards of gravel to the depot on Riccirton road, but the rise in the stream ihaia prevented him from running out the. gravel - a to the Owhiro read. - Otokia Riding.—The Otokio-Kuri road. Big ‘ I Stone road, and M’Master’s road have been 1 surfaced. The old road line across Hatalie’a slip has been reformed and a fairly good job made of the work. The cost to , tha <- County Council was £SI 11s, and the .settlers ' contributed in addition free work to, tha value of £24 Ss. The county have two . gates on tho road that was used for,many years free of cost through Mr Cuff’s property, tj and I recommend that Mr Onff be given kgates as a small return for the concession Igranted. I have always desired to purchase k; the stone quarry on Mr Cuff’s property, and -C. have- now obtained an offer of same, and i ; recommend that the council authorise' the '-I chairman to complete the deaf if the final ' arrangements are satisfactory. Outram and Maungatua.— XJnringk- ' month the old timber bridge on King's! Toad ! I was broken down by the traction engine. i The bridge is being replaced- by 30in bonCrete pipes. Two of the beams- of -tho ' '■■■ Duck Creek bridge, near the comity, hat, ■} were also broken this month. Tho bridge *1 has been temporarily repaired,, but a ; npwf -’i water opening is required in this case. ,- v -If Deep Stream and Strath-Taieri.—The tns- -i socks have been chipped from Tloujig'a a-Ttfl Sc-hoo-1 roads, and a team is now grading the formation. The metalling, of Bald Hill road has been completed,- aisq tho i metalling of the Moonlight road between , > tho finger-post, and Mr Paterson’s gate.’. The ' .Si quarry squad is now engaged blasting’“tSb i * water-tables on tho Moonlight road, nfe&r the m county hut. Centre road, from Wandle ■ Creek to Rock and Pillar, has been graded, A request has been made by Messrs Headerson, Kerr, Cameron, and Atkins'brothers "that ’ the bars of rock across tho road bo blasted, and that the road bo graded from 'Bald Bill towardo their runs.
