RACING WEIGHTS.

XEW SCHEME SUGGESTED. (Fbom Odb Own Corbeswwdfnt.i WELLINGTON, October 23. A new idea is mooted in the New Zealand Times in regard to jockeys’ weights. In the course of the last couple of weeks a scheme, which seems to bo better than the seven stone scheme, has been suggested. It is that what is roughly known as the maximum, but is not really a maximum, should bo raised. In many of the races the handicappers are compelled to commence their handicaps at not less than 9st. The new idea is that 9st should be raised to (say) 9.4. This would have the effect of raising the middle of the handicap about 61b and others lower down the list would come up 71b. This idea does away with the objection of some of the owners who oppose the raising of the minimum. The objection is that a 71b rise at the bottom would only mean a 21b rise to the top and would not benefit the heavier jockeys very much.
