PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Councillors Lunn, Allen, Borrie, Mi’Lachlau, Cable, Asher, Smith, and Anderson attended the ordinary meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council last night. The Mayor (Mr J. Watson) presided. MOTOR VEHICLES BILL. The Town Manager drew attention to tho Municipal Conference having adopted the recommendation sent by the council in regard to the Motor Vehicles Bill. CORRESPONDENCE. The Minister of Railways stated that there was no cogent reason why passengers travelling between intermediate stations in suburban areas should pay less than passengers between country stations.—Received. The Secretary of the Hospital Board advised that henceforth levies by contributory bodies would bo payable quarterly instead of monthly.—Received. F. xiolden wrote suggesting that the south side of Mary street bo improved by making a concrete charlnel. Seven years ago he had complained about the condition of the street. —The matter wag referred to the Works Committee. The Secretary of the local branch of the League of Nations Union applied for tho Town Hall for a public meeting.—lt was resolved to give the use of hall free of cost, councillors agreeing to pay the rent themselves. Messrs Miller and Tunnage asked for a water service to the boat-building premises. --It was decided to grant the request provided the main could supply another service. The local lawn tennis club applied for permission to make two tennis courts on tbe reclaimed land on the tunnel side of Mussel Bay.—A Reputation in support of the application waited on the council and explained the position.—lt was stated that unless the site was granted there would be no tennis this year, as the old courts at the school grounds were no longer available.—Cr Anderson said the reclamation pipes would probably be through tho tunnel in July, and the tennis site should be laid off in conformity with permanent levels.— Cl- M‘Lachlan said a deputation from tile lawn tennis club had waited on the Finance Committee. The site should bo in conformity with the approved plan.—lt was resolved to grant the club’s request, the Reserves Committee and engineer of the Harbour Board to confer as to the position. Reports. The Works Committee reported that the foremen had repaired steps at Bellevue place and connected the footpath by concrete steps and hand-rail at Laing street. Throe loads of screenings had been spread on Constitution street, u post put in the footpath at Waitati road, and screenings put in the shed for asphalt. Atud tanks had been cleared and the main streets auu channels accorded the usual attention. The report was adopted. Tho Finance Committee recommended that certain accounts be passed for payment.—Tho report was adopted. The Water and Gas Committee reported that the receipts amounted to £lO4 8s and the expenditure to £75 11s 9d. Everything was now satisfactory at the gasworks. In August 26 tons of coal were carbonised for 393,000 feet of gas. The assistant attended to some of the manager s duties while the latter was reading meters. After a g-as service had been put in his services would be again available for borough work. The foreman had completed a water service to the Crescent Hotel and repaired one in Island terrace. The water officer would remove the silt out of tire small reservoir in three more days. He had cleaned out the race and proposed to build a stone support for the piping at the new bridge.—'Hie report was adopted. The council then went into committee to deal with several matters.
