AUCKLAND, September 15. Eric Thompson, aged 21, was charged in the Police Court with the theft of ±412 Vs 60, the property of W. and it. Fletcher (Ltd.). He pleaded guilty, and in a statement to the police said that he had taken the money at various times, hoping to repay it, and had spent it on pleasure. He was committed for sentence on bail of £SOO. ihe Makura put up a good running from Suva, to Auckland, the voyage occupying about two days 22i hours, the average speed being 16.65 'knots. The best day’s run was 400 miles, an average of 16.8 knots. GISBORNE, September 15. The post office at Manutuke was broken into on Saturday, and two parcels of stamps and 36s in money were taken. The police arrested a young Native, Haro Akura, who was to-day remanded for a week on a charge of burglary. WELLIiN’GTON, September 15. The Director-General of has received information from the High Commissioner to the effect that, despite the tame whioh Jersey cattle have attained throughout the world, a resident of Jersey told the Commissioner’s Office that people on the island use New Zealand butter, which is sold in every shop. Local butter is said to be very scarce, and not very good. The Wellington District Methodist Executive, holding office as a Temperance and Public Morals Committe of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, his passed a resolution earnestly protesting against the proposal before Parliament to grant licenses in the King Country and calling on Parliament to resist such proposal.
