COOKING CLEANLINESS.
There is nothing in the world so objectionable as a house or flat permeated with the odour from past and present cooking operations. Often —particularly in small fiats—it is difficult to prevent this, but there are one or two hints which will considerably reduce the objectionable odours. _ ' Keep the kitchen door shut and the window open when cooking, and if the smell still penetrates, hang a damp sheet over the door. This will absorb much and can be washed frequently. When the cooking is over add to a bowl of hot water two or three drops of oil of lavender. This will have a wonderfully refreshing effect upon the atmosphere of the room in which it is stood. More important than cure, however, is prevention, and the surest preventive of cooking smells is a scrupulously clean o von or gas-stove. Greasy ovens and gas-stoves simply reek and fill the house with the fumes.
