A FIGHTING PARSON

STRIKES TITLED CHURCH WARDEN

LONDON", August 29. The Eev. Frank Michael Dowland-Ryan, M.C., who was born in Australia, was charged at Brixham to-day with having assaulted Sir Thomas Lennard, a church warden. Prosecutor said he visited the church to investigate the removal of a notice from the door. The vicar called him a fool, and witness retorted: “You are a cad.’’ Defendant then struck him on the chest, the blow causing him to stagger. On a previous occasion defendant said: '“lf you were a younger man I would knock you down.’’ Defendant gave evidence that Sir Thomas Lennard was irate and used the term “cad.” He admitted he might have pushed informant, but denied calling him a fool. The case was dismissed. Jn cross-examination it was elicited that feeling had been created in the parish relative to the introduction of the confessional and the use of incense. Mr Dowland-Ryan has a splendid war record, both as a padre and as a nrivato before being ordained in Canada. He had also served before the mast and had worked as a miner ob the Yukon.
