MODERN SCHOOL PRODUCT.
A LACK OF EFFICIENCY.
TOO MUCH FRILLING IN SYLLABUS (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September 12. The efficiency of the modern school product was not praised by Mr Masters in a speech in the House of Representatives this afternoon. Mr Masters said ha was inclined to think that the school syllabus was crowded with too much frilling, and that a great deal of time was given to almost unnecessary subjects, while those which should have more attention were being hampered. In Grade 4 schools 50 minutes a week were given to reading and 75 minutes to drill, and SO minutes to spelling and 55 minutes to hand work. The grounding was not what he thought it ought to bo. Some of the time could be taken off the hand work and put on to spelling. Employers were complaining that young people were taking employment to-day were weak in spelling, reading, and composition, good in arithmetic, while their writing was disgraceful.
