OF SACRED MEMORY

OBSERVANCE OF ANZAC DAY.

Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.

SYDNEY, September 11. A deputation representing the churches, patriotic associations, and women’s organisations asked the Chief Secretary (Mr C. W. Oakes) to legislate for the stricter observation of Anzac Day, and to place it on the same footing as Good Friday and Christmas Day by dosing the hotels and prohibiting races. They complained under the existing conditions, instead of being devoted to sacred memories, the day was desecrated and made a day of pleasure and excess, by wholesale drinkin,cf and unlimited sport. Sir Oakes said that the Government intended to act along the lines suggested, including the issue of a proclamation forbidding the of hotels and the holding of race meetings.
