PERSONAL.
MINISTERIAL. The Hon. C.'J. Parr, Minister of Education, will leave Wellington for Christchurch to-night. This afternoon he will open the new West Christchurch District High School. In the morning he will meet a deputation from the W.E.A. On Mopday he will perform the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Christchurch Training College. Mr F. Lloyd (Wellington) has been appointed clerk of the Maniototo County Council. There were 57 applicants for the position. At the 'Wellington Competitions Miss Anita Winkle, of Dunedin, was placed first in the recitation by a New Zealand author (open). The Otago Education Board notifies the following appointments;—Miss M. K. J. Whitham, assistant, B.enhar, and Miss C. A. Greene, assistant, Waihola. Mr G. W. Johnstone, music teacher, who intends to visit England, loft Dunedin yesterday morning to join the . steamer Ruahine at Auckland. Private cable advice has been received that Mr A. E. M. Ellis, son of Mr Arthur Ellis, Roslyn, who has been studying electrical engineering in London, has passed his final examination and gained his degree of B.Sc. He will return to New Zealand shortly. His brother, Mr Maurice Ellis, gained his degree las.t year, but he will remain in England for practical experience. Our London correspondent (writing on August 2) mentions that the following New Zealanders have passed the preliminary examination of the Institution of Civil Engineers :—L. A. Lincoln, W. K. M. O’Hara, and C. H. Tele (Auckland), A. B. Bremner (Napier), W. H. French, F. R. E. O’Connor (Wellington), P. Burgoyne, F. W. Petrie (Christchurch), A. T. Gandell (Greymouth), G. D. White-Parsons (Lyttelton), D. E. S. Mason, A. C. Swanson, and R. A. Westwood (Dunedin).
