NEW STEAMER EMPRESS OF FRANCE. The results of tho full power trials of tho Empress of Franco were eminently satisfactory. Tho Boardmoro Company had guaranteed under penalty that the oil consumption would not exceed L.051b nor shaft h.p. for all purposes. Although the vessel is fitted with dinfet turbine machinery—which is well known to ensure tho maximum of comfort from tho passengers’ point of view, but involves a rather heavier oil consumption than geared machinery—results on tho trials wore well within tho figure given. Tho speed attained on trial was l£>i knots. The vessel sailed from Southampton early in Juno to take up her running in tho Canadian-Pacific services. SCHOONER CATHKIT SAFE. Thirty-seven days out from Sydney, and 31 days overdue, the schooner Cathkit sailed into the port of Hobart ou tho morning of August 10. When tho .schooner was four days out bad weather was met with, and lasted for 10 days. Tho winds v;ero against the schooner, and, driving before a gale of hurricane force, she was blown to sea for 250 miles, and when she was returning she was blown away a second time. Tho steamer Mawatta was sighted the first week ;n August, but was too far off to distinguish distress signals. A wave swept the schooner from ctem to stern and the pumps wore worked. BIG FRENCH LINER UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Work has been started on tho construction of a new 45,009-ton passenger‘liner for the French Lino for service Ixstwcen Franco and Now York. The vessel, which ia expected to bo ready for operation in the summer of 1926, will cost about 100,000,000 franca. She will bo an oil-burtier and 850 ft long, and will bo equipped with either a quadruple or twin-screw electric-drive capable of developing a speed of 23 or 24 knots. She will have accommodation for 500 first, 700 second, and, 2000 third-class passengers, and a cargo capacity of about 2501) tons. When this vessel loaves the ways another vessel of similar size and construction will be started, to be placed in seivice in 1027 or 1928. FRENCH COMPANY’S OPERATIONS.
