MOSGIEL SCHOOL.
ARBOR DAY. Favoured with a beautiful spring’ day, the fust step of any magnitude towards the beautification of the Mosgiel School grounds took place yesterday. Since Mr Martin's appointment' as head master the school gardens have become no small part if the life of the schoo 1 and the keenness shown by both boys and girls suggests that Mr Martin's programme is a popular one. The latest addition to the school glebe has been transformed into what promises to bo one of die best school gardens in Otago. At present it is in the making, but sufficient progress has been made to enable one to judge what the garden will look like when completed. A deposit of gravel has been discovered on the property, and this is being used to make paths, while the ground has been levelled by surplus soil carted from the borough streets. At the appointed hour the parents of the scholars and members of school committee assembled. The children were marshalled in the school drill area, and addressed by Mr Martin, the Mayor, and the Rev. D. Caldcr and Mr Rutherford (on behalf of the committee in the unavoidable absence of the chairman, Mr M'Oartney). The last-named arrived later in the day and took part in the planting of the trees. After the addresses had been given, MiMartin divided t.he pupils into groups, and trees wore planted around the scohol glebe by the leaders of each group, while the Mayor and chairman of the school committee planted a tree each in central position. Mr Martin and his staff are to bo complimented on the day's function, which was a bright opening to what promises to bo an instructive and enjoyable portion of school life.
