OBITUARY.

ME BISMARCK SHANNON. (From Odr Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 21. The death took place lost night of Air Bismarck Shannon, who had been an invalid for the past 10 years. Air Shannon was well known in the journalistic and theatrical world of New Zealand. For a number of years he was attached to the literary staffs of the Post and the Now Zealand Times as a writer of theatrical gossip. Ho contributed to many papers in New Zealand. Australia,, America, and England, and passessed a valuable collection of photographs of theatrical celebrities, programmes. and day bills. Ho also had a wonderful memory' for events of the past in connection with the theatre. Ten wears ago he was obliged to relinquish his position on the Post, and for some years past he had been confined to bis bed. Mr Shannon was 50 years of age, and was born in Christchurch. He was the third son of the late Mr R. Shannon, at iope time a .well-known bookseller and stationer in Christchurch. His brothers are Mr Percy Shannon, of (ho Sportsman, Sydney, and Air Alex, Shannon, the wellknown sporting writer. The funeral will take place to-morrow morning. MR ALFRED BALDEY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 21. An old colonist, Mr Alfred Baldey, died here yesterday at the age of 89. The late Mr Baldey left England for Melbourne in 1852. Me went, to Bendigo, and was present at the Eureka Stockade. Coming to New Zealand in 1855, lie took up farming in Southland, and participated actively in many public affairs doing his residence there of 26 years. In 1903 ho was airpointed a member of the Legislative Council, and took np his residence in Wellington, where he had resided ever since. Ho was a gentleman of the old school, whose kindly disposition gained for him a wide circle of friends.
