NOTES IJiOI-I PRESS GALLERY. (From Oob Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 21. SUBURBAN SETTLEMENT. The Lands Committee, reporting on proposals by the Government to exercise certain options over 600 acres of land for railway duplication purposes in the Hutt Valloy, recommended that, in view of the undoubted necessity to duplicate the railway and the deviation of it through these lands, the demand which existed for homes in the vicinity of large cities, and the necessity of providing room for the people of Wellington, that the Government should negotiate with the owners of the land for the purchase thereof. 'The scheme will open 1300 sections for settlement. the new governor-general. 11l the House of Representatives this afternoon Mr J. A. Lee (Auckland East) gave notice to ask the Prime Minister on next sitting day whether, in view of the difficulty of getting a Governor-General from overseas at a salary of £7500, he would inquire into the, advisability of appointing a Govern or Gen erad from among the citizens of Now Zealand. “ I will answer the question right away,” stated Mr Massey. “I would just like to say I have no intention of doing anything of the sort.—(‘‘ Hear, hear.”) The list available in Great Britain is not nearly exhausted, and I feel certain that within the next few days a particularly eligible man will have been appointed to the high position of Governor-General of New Zealand. ”
