THE GOVERNOR-GENERALSHIP.
ADMIRAL RE EOBECK DECURES. THE FINANCIAL ASPECT. (Fhom Oob Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 20. Through Ins Excellency, the GovernorGeneral, l.he Government has now received an intimation that Admiral Sir John de Roboek has declined the appointment of Governor-General of New Zealand Jn succession to Admiral of the Fleet, Viscount Jellicuo. It is understood that his main reason for declining the office is the expense he would have to incur in connection therewith. It is well-known hero that the cost to a Governor-General in these days is much more than the salary he receives. The furnishing of Government House with silver, linen, etc., to say nothing of the entertaining that has to he done, is much more costly than it used to be. The Gov-ernor-General has oven to replace breakages in crockery, etc. This matter has received the attention of the Government which, although it does not propose to alter the existing law,, has indicated to the Imperial authorities its willingness to take over part of the financial obligations attaching to the office of Governor-General of the dominion.
The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia receives a salary of £IO,OOO per annum, and in New Zealand the salary is £SOOO, with allowances amounting to £2500, thus making the total sum at the disposal of the Governor-General £7500. The Civil List Act of 1920 provides for the Governor-General in its second schedule as follows: Salary £5000; allowance for salaries and expenses of his establishment, exclusive of the official secretary, £2000: allowance for the travelling expenses of himself, his family, officers, and servants, £SOO.
